You're struggling to analyze social impact data. How can you make sense of it all?

It is imperative to ensure that the data that is being collected is accurate, complete and consistent. Missing/inaccurate values must be addressed before identifying goals. In order to effectively create targets, key metrics must be identified based on the collected data. These metrics must be related to the goals/targets and may include indicators such as number of beneficiaries, employment-unemployment ratios etc. Combining qualitative and quantitative data through mixed methods research may prove beneficial.

In my experience, the entire process is a journey and data should not be treated as an afterthought. The foundation of setting your “Theory of change” (TOC) should be sound and clear> once this is in place then it’s a matter of detailing it out on a step by step basis. Check in your inputs > outputs> Outcomes ……which lead to your impact. With this we work the details in defining your key indicators to track…( but hey this is the part where our Project Management hat comes in and we would go into a mode of “scarcity of data “ which lead to multiple data collection spree. So, we need to pull back and go back to basic and find out what you really need to track that will help you achieve those outcome.

Determine your key intelligence question—what are you trying to find out with this information? Having this clear and concise question ahead of time will help you stay focused on the key objective and also help organize and format the information you get effectively. Keep in mind any biases or assumptions you may have ahead of time to strive for objectivity.

In my experience, for you to define your goals and indicators: Clearly articulate what impact you want to achieve and identify specific quantitative and qualitative indicators tied to those goals that you can track over time. This creates a focused measurement framework.

There are several analytic tools you can use to find patterns and trends in data, such as a brainstorming session, an ACH (Analyses of Competing Hypotheses), Red Team/Blue Team, etc. It is normal to have some missing, incomplete, or inconsistent data; however you must be up front about this when presenting the data to any audience. For example, you can have an ‘Intelligence Gaps’ slide or text box. This will only serve to bring more credibility to your overall presentation of the data and allows room for your analytic line to change should you get similar additional data points. Presenting the different analytic tools used along with the results—even if in an appendix—will also lend credibility to your results.

Analyzing social impact data effectively requires a strategic approach. It's crucial to integrate diverse methods like surveys, interviews, and digital analytics for a holistic view. When you treat the data of others as sovereign data of theirs, then you have to organize around a way of time and space in accessing that belonging to others. pre-planning on how to respect the data by involving the community at the start in the preplanned stages. This form of preplanning is less dependant on western and institutionalized forms of data gathering.

Don't interprete it alone! There is so much richness to be drawn from joint/multi analysis; particularly if you have a diverse range of analysts and do it with people with proximity to the issue. Tools like dedoose are great for co-analysis

To visualize and interpret social impact data, consider using graphs, charts, and maps to convey trends. Use tools like bar charts for comparisons, line graphs for trends over time, and heat maps to show geographical variations. Additionally, narratives, key performance indicators (KPIs), and stakeholder testimonials can provide qualitative insights. Remember to focus on the story behind the data to make it more relatable and understandable.

Visualization and interpretation can help with the analysis process. But beforehand, you must ensure that the data is clean in order to analyze. I still remember my mentor use to guide me and helped me with analysis process and his first words were learn the skill of interpretation.

Interpretations using western methodologies including ethnological and archaeological approaches maybe more damaging to data interpretation of Indigenous societies because the content and already made schemes to interpret data are culturally hegemonic and politically motivated to control data as Western hegemony .

Give the bottom line up front when presenting the data—what conclusion does all this data indicate or suggest? Professional looking graphics are by far the best way to represent a large number of data points effectively and showcase the overall result or story line this data may be pointing to. No matter who your audience is, a graphic will have much more impact than text blocks or excel sheets. (The full data should be on hand to provide of course).

When sharing data visualizations about social impact, I recommend shaping it as a story rather than a dashboard. This allows you to bring more context around your insights (why was this data important to collect in the first place?) but also to connect with your mission and the people impacted by your mission. Humans relate better to another than to a big data point. Complement your data with real-life stories and voices. This will improve the understanding and the impact of your data insights.

First, you need to know what data to look for before you even get to analyse the data. If you are collecting data on your own you should define the data structures carefully so as not to miss out on anything which can be an issue. If you are using a secondary data source then you are left with no choice but to define the structures yourself but you may need to understand what that data has. Finally, you start making sense of the data by doing preliminary analysis and eventually run the deeper analysis using any of the tools mentioned by fellow contributors above.
