You’re a strategy executive. How can you develop a strong sense of purpose in your work?

Being clear in linking the purpose to the strategy is key: 1- Link your bigger objectives to why it’s there. 2- Timely On-Boarding of your stakeholders makes a big difference. 3- Get the right people in place to drive your strategy to life. 4- Agree with all stakeholder on the end-of-mind of your strategy, to make sure you’re all driving in the right way with the perfect speed. Securing the above would make you drive a purposeful Strategy to Reality.

Identify how you align with the companies purpose. Don’t limit yourself to the specific job you were hired for. Identifying how you can be valuable to the organization and the fire that drives you. Take self inventory of your skills and determine what you believe can helpful to you and the organization. Find your ‘North Star’. Remember what Walt Disney said “in order for you to do the impossible you need to see the invisible”

As a leader, your “why” is a huge influence on those you lead. When it’s authentic and resonates with the company mission, you gain loyalty and trust from the people you work with. The first executive I worked for owned and articulated her purpose regularly. She loved helping people and creating memorable customer service experiences. It was a genuine obsession she talked about daily. Everyone in the company rallied around her “why” and customer service became a cornerstone for growth of the business. It was part of the company’s DNA. Reflect and define your purpose. Seek opportunities that let you lean into it. When a leader’s personal “why” aligns with the business’s mission, it inspires the team to strive for excellence.

First truly understand how your product or service solve consumers' problem. Second it would be more meaningful and impactful if the business can deliver beyond financial performance, it helps society and environment we live in.

Purpose in business might seem naive at first sight, but it is not at all. It makes sure that you remain relevant in the long run. You become part of that bigger thing which is humanity. It helps to elevate your company, your team and its client to something bigger than themselves, which to me is the real meaning of inspiring people. It makes that your team, your clients and your eco system will tie to your organisation's purpose and it will become a strong driver for success. And to conclude you will find out that it is not naive, but the reason why your company might also be very profitable. Henry Ford stated that if you are contributing to society your profits will become embarrassingly high.

Just like a compass when traveling is your why when planning your life. Create your plan to align your goals and steps to your vision statement. Embrace your goals on as the map and chart your course to a purposeful life, guiding your actions and aspirations. Remember, as topography changes, so do your goals. Be fluid with your plans and habits to achieve your goals. The key is to learn along the journey!

To me, there's a big difference between ambitions and aspirations. We usually only talk about ambitions, but aspirations help us build and nurture trust in all changes.

Ask/Find out their purpose and values. Understand these and relate them to the overall purpose and values that the organization stand for. Rationalize and assist the visualisation as to how they are aligned Once the values and purpose are in congruent, they are more open to listen and embrace the next steps and support the next milestones

Alignment begin with the right communication in the right time. As Strategy is a long term objective within a framework make sure to follow a timely actions along with competitive competency to have a successful mission.

Get out there, speak with clients, employees, other stakeholders, validate whether the work you are doing is REALLY creating value. Go deeper, and inquire how (if) it changes lives of people. If it doesn't, ask yourself whether you are spending your/your company's time on the right thing ('what'), or whether you just need to adapt the 'how'. Would you be as passionate about your work, even at lower pay? Are you solving real world problems or are you "just" contributing to a (single) bottom line. However, don't be to linear in your examination, also explore whether there are side benefits, indirect value generated by your work for the wider community. Strive to understand those better, and make them a conscious element of your daily work.

Use a 360 degree approach to solicit feedback of your work. Ask for feedback from peers, managers, partners and customers. Use a test and learn approach - The intent to fail early and often is to “test and learn” without spending too much money downstream (development costs) and improving customer experience. For example, The intent of plant manager is to maximize throughput and quality while ensuring safety of workers. They still need a test and learn mentality to measure progress, mitigate risks and maximize safety.

Looking out the window and observing what is happening around you, while looking in the mirror and reflecting on your inner thoughts and feelings, can lead to meaningful insights and help ensure that your actions align with your values.

Ask for feedback on what works and what don’t. Clear obstacles or equip them with the tools, skills or knowledge to overcome challenges Seeing you or leading genuinely taking interest and actions to address their concerns and reducing insecurity would build trust. Trust is the most important element in a strategy or change journey. Trust in the vision Trust in the change journey Trust in the team around them Trust in the leaders Trust in the process Because they understand why we are on this journey and know that their interests are taken care of.

Achievements and outcomes are cherished when they are celebrated. When I worked for a scale up, every quarter we celebrated wins and showcased top products and customer testimonials. I also love when managers celebrate milestones such as work success, company tenure anniversaries or recognition of people who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. Remember it’s about the journey not just the destination. Employees will stay motivated when they feel appreciated!

As I have grown in my career, I have learned that working extremely hard and delivering amazing results are not enough when it comes to strategically planning your career or helping others plan theirs. Taking moments of that precious time to reflect on the goodness produced as a result of leading it or contributing to it, is worthy of the pause. Celebrating the wins help shine a light on impacts that may often go unseen and you, your teams, your colleagues making a difference are worthy of that light. So…although time is of the essence. Shine bright! You are building culture by doing so and you never know who may be watching and seeing through you a new possibility for themselves because you shared what you were able to accomplish.

Update, align, adjust if required and celebrate every milestone. Make every stakeholder owners of the strategy. Accountability for results does not end with the executive. It starts with him but is shared by everyone.

Continue to reflect with the team on why the team exists and what value it creates for each stakeholder group (in other words, how it makes a difference).

Once you’ve created a vision statement or established your purpose, review it annually. Priorities shift, situations change and it’s a great opportunity to reassess. Take a day or a week to disconnect from work and take a yearly “purpose break” where you go over your values, goals and life vision. Think about all the areas of your life including family, career, health, love, finance, emotions and decide your foundational area to focus on and supporting areas. Readjust your goals and habits accordingly.

In my experience finding purpose is unique, it’s ?? personal. Everyone cares about different things and these change over time. Tip: Expend the same energy you do for a strategy project but just once try researching yourself as your challenge statement… Really understanding your own personal ’why’ is priceless and then schedule regular time to track your set of metrics (I use a visualisation tool, and watch myself grow and change over time) Take the time!! You’re worth it! (It’s fun)

It’s easy to forget the purpose of your work and impact it creates when you get caught up in the day to day and operationalisation of the strategy. Taking a step back to reflect together with your team (and client) on the work that’s been done and how it was created good for those impacted is important to keep everyone going while learning along the way.

In my experience of sitting through my fair share of "mission and vision" development session as a way of establishing and maintaining purpose in organisations its not the setting of these (although they are inherently important). Its more that you need to develop these not just for the people who are currently there but to recognise those who have already made a contribution in the past and for those who will continue to do so when you are not there.

After defining purpose it is critical you take action and follow through Otherwise you lose momentum and credibility Checking in and being prepared to iterate is also key

Move with intention. Realize that if it was easy, it would have already be done. Merge vision and strategy with purposeful action. Understand the potential impacts of decisions made, weigh pros and cons, and take calculated, smart risks.

Turn your vision into goals and goals into habits. Goals should be specific, measurable and attainable. For example, My vision is to be live until I’m 100 and improve my lifespan through VO2 max increase. One my goals is to increase my VO2 max by 5 points in 1 year. Then quarterly goal is to increase by 2 points Monthly goal is to increase by 1 point. Habits would be to do high intensity exercises 2X a week.

To shift the needle on behaviour change is bias towards action. One of the most effective principles in a transformation is habit stacking and experimentation. Once purpose is clear, strategic priorities outlined, clear roles and responsibilities, ensure habits are reinforced. By habit stacking onto existing routines, by slowly removing non beneficial activities from roles and begin continuous improvement experimenting in areas of high impact areas to maximise roi.

Communicating your purpose is indeed vitally important, but communicating when your purpose isn't realized is also just as important.

The goal needs to be drafted with clear timelines and micro-level planning. Once this exercise is done, work on the execution/ implementation which is the true challenge! The more you work on execution, higher the rate of course-correction in the original plan. This fine-tuning is the real proof of the pudding. Also, the more a strategy professional works on execution, his/ her ability to create better strategies evolves over time.

Purpose matters because it gives meaning to life, guides behaviour, and contributes to overall well-being and success. Purpose-driven individuals tend to be more focused, determined, and persistent in pursuing their goals.

As a leader, it's not enough to be a servant leader. But rather a transformational leader. One that drives the business values and transforms it to 'shared values.' In a 'shared value' environment, all understands the company's business values and how each can contribute. In transforming people..it is important to emphatically recognize that each individual has a role to play in the company. This need to be translated to Goals with SMART KPIs. Whenever a milestone or KPI is achieved to recognize it and celebrate no matter how simple.
