3 Tools of Lean

Lean Manufacturing relies on a variety of tools and techniques that help identify and eliminate waste, optimize the flow of value, and implement continuous improvement. Value stream mapping is a visual tool that displays the current and future state of a process, pinpointing sources of waste and improvement opportunities. 5S is a method for organizing the workplace, based on five Japanese words. Kaizen is a practice of making small, incremental changes that improve the process and the product. Kanban is a system that controls the flow of work by using visual signals that indicate the status and demand of each task. Poka-yoke is a technique that prevents or detects errors by using devices or methods that make it difficult to make mistakes.

4 How to apply Lean

To apply Lean Manufacturing to your own work, you need to follow a systematic process that involves four steps. Planning involves defining the problem, the goal, and the scope of the project. Analyzing the current state of the process and identifying sources of waste and root causes of the problem is also important, as is designing the future state of the process and proposing solutions and actions to achieve the goal. The Do step involves implementing solutions and actions in a small scale or a pilot test, observing and collecting data on performance and impact of changes. Checking involves comparing results with goals and expectations, evaluating effectiveness and efficiency of solutions and actions, and identifying gaps and areas for improvement. Act involves standardizing solutions that work, eliminating those that don't, communicating changes, documenting outcomes, celebrating achievements, rewarding successes, and identifying next problems and goals.
