I have worked with emerging talent for nearly two decades, and one thing I would always encourage is to be proactive, suggesting help with tasks that go beyond your initial mandate. By demonstrating your proactive approach and willingness to help others, you can earn trust, respect, and recognition, which can open doors to new opportunities and career advancement in the long run. Adding new skills and continuing to learn, all with a smile.

If you're like me, you begin eager to learn and ready to assist! Identify the person in your organization/department that is the most knowledgeable and the most willing to share their knowledge! Ask questions about all the moving parts.

The one simple thing you can start with, when you're just beginning is - go talk to that one senior who has been your role model, or inspiration. He/she does not have to be your mentor. But, they can be your go-to person for anything that you have. Gradually, you can get the right mentor from their network. When there's a senior who's already in your favour, others will not hesitate to support you for your growth.

Start with asking the seniors for their advice and to understand the team culture and working preferences. Next, look for a mentor to guide you in your role. Create learning opportunities with these group of individuals who understand the ins and outs of the organization!

To advance in your career, actively seek out potential mentors who have the experience and knowledge to guide you. These individuals can offer invaluable advice, open doors to new opportunities, and help you navigate challenges in your field, accelerating your professional growth and success.

People are almost always excited to help someone early in their career. Here's what to keep in mind: 1. Only reach out if what you want is aligned to their expertise/experience. Don't spam. 2. They are most likely busy. Keep it specific and short. 3. People love helping those who help themselves. Show your commitment: do thorough research, have solid questions, show up prepared. 4. Follow up upto twice, if you don't get a response.

When reaching out to potential mentors to get ahead in your career, approach them respectfully and professionally. Express genuine interest in their work and clearly communicate how their guidance could help you, showing appreciation for their time and expertise. This respectful approach increases the likelihood of establishing a productive mentor-mentee relationship.

Mentoring is a beautiful relationship that nourishes on trust, respect and mutual benefit. Clarity of goals and frequent interactions that is open and honest will help. I had been a mentee and mentor and have gained immensely from both as I have tried to pass on whatever I have learned from my mentors to my mentees adding some value addition. It makes you really happy.

There’s a part about taking your time. One of the advantages you have of entering a ‘new system’ is that you arrive with a fresh pair of eyes. Set about trying to understand that system, how does it work, who are the ‘gate keepers’ and real influencers. As you go around and develop your network look at the connections that are at play.

Early on, I always struggled telling a mentor when I felt we'd achieved what we set out to do. As a mentor now, I would value such a message more than anything else! So I urge all early career professionals: it's not odd or impolite. Let your mentor know if you no longer need to chat or your needs have evolved beyond their expertise. They want you to succeed fast more than anything else. Ask them for an intro to your next mentor! If you had a good relationship, they'd be more than happy to open up their network.

As you journey with your mentor, it's vital to assess and refine your mentoring dynamic. Regular check-ins with both your mentor and yourself are key to gauge goal progress, satisfaction with the relationship, and the need for adjustments. Celebrate milestones, acknowledge hurdles, and set sights on what's next. Stay flexible, embracing new ideas and directions. When the time comes, gracefully conclude the relationship or transition to a new phase. Remember, this journey is about growth and mutual learning.

In my first job as an IT specialist in a global tech firm, I realised during orientation that I was one of one a hundred hires in the same role. Differentiating was immediately at the top of mind. First, recognize you need to stand out. You’re not special until you prove it. Ask yourself: 1?? Doing your job is basic. What additional value are you creating? Are you on high profile projects? Are you taking on special initiatives? Volunteering in action groups? 2?? Are you visible. Do you show up at work to network with stakeholders? Do you turn on your camera and contribute meaningfully to discussions? Events? 3?? Are you taking initiative and putting out not just great work yourself, but do you enhance the work of others?

3 main things I see entry-level specialists overlook: 1) approaching senior colleagues for feedback, suggestions, and tips No, they will not force their opinions on you unless you're interested in learning how to improve your performance. 2) learning to take things off your manager's plate This is a vital step towards building a whole new level of rapport with your manager and making yourself noticed by the right decision-maker 3) diversifying tasks to build a versatile skill set Do not wait for your manager or team lead to give you encouragement and permission to upgrade. You can start cultivating your future-proof expertise sooner.

When starting out in your career, this is a perfect time to develop a personal brand. This is a statement which expresses your unique value proposition and the core tenets of your vision, values and all that encompasses you as person. As you create a personal brand, think about your social media engagement, strategic networking efforts within and outside your organization, and leadership, follower-ship, and over time executive presence. As you consider your brand think about those who are in a position to serve as mentor, sponsor, or ally. Once you create your brand and engage in tactics, you can change, refine and add to mix of activities over time. The key is to put forth something that is authentic and cohesive.

Be better, work smarter, be professional and you will get noticed. Do not try to make yourself indispensable. That is not the goal. Bosses don’t like being held to ransom. Being diligent and deliver is key. The trick is to get noticed without waving your arms around. You get noticed by being excellent. Honest. And authentic. Don’t be an arse licker. Be yourself. Enjoy what you do. If you don’t, leave. You are allowed to be happy.
