When starting a new job, avoid common mistakes such as neglecting to ask questions, never make assumptions, what is obvious to you may not be obvious to your new workmates. Another common mistake is believing that you can do it all by yourself and that you do not need anyone in so doing failing to establish good relationships with colleagues, not seeking feedback or guidance from them, being resistant to change doing everything your own way. If you are able to resist falling into this by being proactive, open-minded, and attentive, you can navigate initial stages of your new job successfully and establish a strong foundation for your career growth. Being humble and willing to learn is the best way to go about settling in a new job.

Not Asking Enough Questions: It’s important to ask questions when you’re unsure about something. It shows that you’re eager to learn and can prevent misunderstandings or mistakes. Not Understanding the Company Culture: Every workplace has its own culture and norms. Failing to understand these can lead to awkward situations or misunderstandings. Overcommitting: While it’s good to be enthusiastic and willing to take on tasks, overcommitting can lead to stress and burnout. It’s important to know your limits Not Building Relationships: Building relationships with your colleagues can make your work environment more enjoyable and can open up opportunities for collaboration and learning.

I have learned promise long and deliver short. This is especially true in a new role. It is completely acceptable to take time to understand the role, requirements, projects, cross-department support, etc. Once you understand the overall picture, you can reach further to complete tasks more quickly. I am also seeing a lot of suggestions to ask questions, that is also true, However, be sure you do your homework first. Actively listen, take good notes, do not be afraid to write down notes (not just on a computer), then research. Once you have done that, then ask questions. Also, it is helpful to let co-workers or managers know, you do not have questions at this time, but would like to circle back if you do once you begin the project.

At the start of a new job, be humble. Even if you were a top performer at your previous role, it takes time to adjust to the expectations of a new company and a new team. Thus, don't underestimate yourself at the start. In meetings, listen more than you talk. Carefully observe your team's culture, and if your team is using technologies or tools you're unfamiliar with, take the time to learn them. Moreover, set realistic expectations for yourself and check-in regularly with your manager for feedback.

Perhaps one of the most important yet most difficult parts of adjusting to a new team or company is the cultural norms. Companies are different, and teams are different. Some may be more laid back, while others move at a rather fast pace. Thus, at the start, carefully observe how not only your teammates but also other employees interact with one another. How are meetings and events structured? How do they greet each other? What are the company's values? Those are a handful of things to take into consideration when learning and adjusting to the culture and norms of your new company.

Culture/norms play a huge role when joining a new organization. I joined a team where people constantly ignored dress code. I was frustrated with the "favoritism". First world issues, right? 3 weeks later I learned people "earned" the right to dress down. It was an award not mentioned during orientation. It's important to fully appreciate and understand the overall culture before demanding changes or making comments about unfair practices. Take a few weeks to understand the dynamics of your group and the larger organization. Unless of course, you were hired to completely change the culture.

To become successful, influential, build rapport and trust, you must build up a strong internal network. Ensure to have meetings with all your stakeholders to present yourself, find out who they are, what their goals are, and how you can best collaborate going forward.

Best practice is to find a partner who can show you the ropes. Sometimes yo experience drama and conflict early on, but it is important to remember, you need to experience everything first hand. It is easy to fall into "clicks", yes, they exist in corporate just like in college. Take time, get to know your colleagues, actively listen, but also listen to your inner voice. Work on your brand as a person and colleague, rather than focusing on office politics.

I learned a saying recently, curious people make it further than know-it-alls. Part of my brand is to "go in asking". This has saved me a lot of grief. Ask for clarity, feedback, or assistance when necessary. Also, don't be afraid to make a change. I changed industries to work for a particular company, there were no openings in HR so I started in operations. This helped me learn how the organization operated. The salary was about the same as I had been earning. When a recruiting/HR position opened a couple of years later, I was promoted into the position, received an increase, and had more potential to grow my career in HR. I found I was more confident than I'd been in my past HR role because I understood the orgs mission.

No matter what time of the year you start, make sure to have a growth conversation with your leader. There you can discuss the roles key skills, how you meet up to them, and agree on how you should work on them going forward. Don't just consider traditional learning, but also projects to be involved in, colleagues to learn from,mentorship etc.

At the end of the day, if you neglect your well being, it will neglect you. Work with your manager to set reasonable expectations. Perhaps you need to take a long hour lunch so you can go to the gym and eat. Many managers understand this need, more so now, than ever, so discuss. If you are in a call center, this is a bit tougher, but I find it's best to ask. Also, tap into your orgs ERP (employee resource program) and to not underestimate the importance of volunteer work (if your org supports this). I find it a great way to give back, support the organization, and my manager is 100% onboard with me stepping away for a day or a few hours. As long as it is planned around important deadlines I need to reach.

Starting a new job is challenging as we aim to establish ourselves in the role and prove ourselves. Setting realistic expectations and prioritizing self-care is critical to navigating this period of adjustment successfully.

By allowing yourself this grace period and actively shaping your initial days, you set a foundation for long-term success and seamless integration into the organizational fabric.

Don't forget networking. Get to know your colleagues, take the initiative to introduce yourself, listen and learn about others; experiences, offer help and support if a co-worker needs help on a project, join inter-company groups to socialize and bond with peers, use online networking platforms like LinkedIn or Slack.

Don't try to change things too quickly. Take time to understand the whole picture, the current situation, how they got there and what are perceived issues. You will surely have ideas for change and improvement while learning all this, but pace yourself, so your actions and changes build toward the new desired state.
