Forming relationships is something that is often missed as we can laser focus on the goals at hand and not the people. With building relationships you are then grafted opportunities to identify strengths and weaknesses within the company and form solutions to where all players involved are operating at their fullest potential which then transpires through the work at hand.

2 Dress appropriately

The way you dress can affect how others perceive you and how you feel about yourself. Dressing appropriately for your new job means following the dress code, if there is one, or observing the norms and standards of your workplace. You don't have to sacrifice your personal style, but you should aim for a professional, neat, and comfortable appearance. Avoid anything too casual, flashy, or provocative, unless it suits the culture of your organization.

When it comes to dressing know your audience, know the workplace, but most of all if you are in public relations and you are representing a brand or department also know and have that understanding of that you are that representation of whom you work for. You will be sacrificing your comfort for your appearance at times. That does not mean that in your office you can't be comfortable when it is just you and your computer. Personally, when I have down time, I always bring an extra pair of nice, classy shoes that I can change into or even cloths that I can wear until it is game time and I need to be on my "A" game. I know hard but don't under or over dress so do your research prior to your first day and showing up and feeling uncomfortable.

3 Introduce yourself

One of the first things you should do when you start your new job is to introduce yourself to your co-workers, managers, and clients. Be friendly, confident, and courteous. Smile, make eye contact, and shake hands firmly. Use your full name and title, and briefly explain your role and background. You can also ask some questions about their work and interests, and listen attentively to their answers. Remember to use their names and titles correctly, and thank them for their time.

4 Be punctual and reliable

Being punctual and reliable is essential for any job, but especially for a new one. It shows that you respect your own time and that of others, that you are organized and disciplined, and that you can be trusted to deliver on your commitments. Be humble. No matter how much experience you have, every agency, every corporation has their own voice and culture. Be open to relearning everything.You still have the skills, but in the Comms world you serve your executive team. Learn their voice, earn their trust, and participate in everything so can learn the company culture. You'll need the buy-in from your execs and the employees if you're going to be their voice. Be flexible and remember, your role is that of an advisor. They make the final decisions. Ask questions about what they like, don't like, and wish to change. Create allies you can turn to for advice and use as a sounding board. Get to know as many people as you can at all levels of the organization.

When it comes to public administration there are many things to consider but one little bit of advice I would give is to not over think it. You got the job for a reason, whom ever you are now going to work for sees something in you, you are the right person, right fit, and you are more that capable to do the job so go in, own it, be you, don't be afraid to ask questions, and thrive. If you don't do any of those you are only doing yourself a disservice for the position that you got verse anyone else. IT took me the longest time to realize this myself but once I did, it was game over and I was able to accomplish anything in any role I was in.
