Motivation is sometimes required. Ideally not but normally yes. How is largely dependent on who - personalities. I've had to convince people they were capable of something they didn't think was possible because it had to be done. Other people will go through a wall for you if needed, they're that dedicated to making the project a success. Those are the ones that deserve the rewards. I've also implemented recognition programs on projects, for safety and execution, and found them highly beneficial. Many companies make no allowance for this, very short-sighted IMO. Project meals - feed everyone lunch and give them an appreciation speech while they're eating - are highly effective. You want everyone giving discretionary effort, this helps.
