Summary - I’d rather tailor my excel sheet to suit the complexity of the project and keep it as simple and as basic as possible. Its tough enough having a complex project to navigate, why make it even more complex with a complex budgeting tool.
Tools should make follow up and reporting easier and more efficient. Even when using professional planner/tracking tools, I always told my team to track the nitty gritty detailsin a separate Excel sheet.

How comfortable you are with the software and ease of use will determine your buy-in and thus that of your team. Find what works for you to utilize easily. Do they offer a free trial? Do they help you with onboarding the solution? What reporting capabilities are available? Can your accounting firm access it externally? Is it hosted? All of these things will need to be determined ahead of time.
I would also ask your team if they are familiar with any specific software before evaluating a new one. And of course understanding the why behind adding it!

By using the right tools, you will facilitate the collaboration with your clients and their stakeholders, but also improve the cost-effectiveness of your assignments as you will bring a solution that actually fits with the client's context and environment.
Excel is adequate for most project budgetting requirements. I prefer this to an add-on feature for budgetting in MS-Project. This way all assumptions can be clearly made and documented. It also allows for a Monte Carlo risk analysis add-on like Oracle Crystalball.
