You’re starting a career in mechanics. What are the most important things to be aware of?

What you learn is far more important than what you earn in your early jobs. Select your position based on who you'll be learning from and you'll fast track your success. In the long run this will earn you SO much more!

Find a mentor like Jason Wipp, and learn to listen with intent. Money can buy any tool Jason owns, but his investment and energy committed to expanding his knowledge remains priceless.

My background is Powersports so the biggest thing we see when starting a new Tech is their ability to realize they need to start at the bottom. Many times they get out of school with the assumption that they are an A-Tech. This is not the case. Many shops will start them out by changing tires, building bikes, and doing oil changes. Having a positive attitude and a willingness to learn will get you well on your way.

I agree with Tom R^. Mentors are most important. Listen, learn, do and gain the priceless experience. Experience will endure. ?????

Lift correctly, protect your hearing, eyes and hands. They are not replacable nor is your life. Always be cautious of equipment and double check if you need too, no one will judge you for double checking.

For me it's been a great and exciting career choice you're constantly learning new things there's always some challenges however it's not a cheap field to get into you have to invest a lot of money in tools and training to keep up with the demand in new vehicles

Acquiring new skills and gaining experience in hands-on knowledge require you to actively participate in jobs. Learn to make positive and quality contributions

Don't expect to know the solution, it's okay not too, be creative in the way you test and diagnose. If someone has told you a different way to correct something but you want to try it a different way that's OK, you maybe wrong but do not stop ever being creative (especially making your own sst)

Troubleshooting is a huge part of my job. Never go into a problem thinking you know the answer. It's important to go into an issue with an opened mind because it's not always what you think it is.

Learn a structured diagnostic process that facilitates making a plan and works in every situation. Execute it with creativity. There are efficient tools to buy and essential training to complete through an entire career. The GOATs in this field know how to make and execute a plan.

i have found not only in a workshop , but everywhere. Youre colegues and teammembers especialky managers and HR's are not to be made friends. in a proffesion there are no friends you can sosiakise together as often as you want,but always remember you are there to perform duties and not to cover for ppl...you are replacable...so dont try en get into good books or be friends with anyone....just do your work and reoort probkems as accurate as you can.
