Another option outside of prior schooling is to find a company that has quality internal training! One that will teach you the basics all the way to specialized skills. A company that will invest in you while you invest in them! An example of this within the Oil & Gas Industry when I started was CDM Resource Management, they has since been consumed by USA Compression but no longer have a training program. The only current company that I am aware of that has a fully functional training program from Entry to Master Level Training is Kodiak Gas Services.

My father once told me never to slam a door that you’re exiting as you open another. He used that analogy to describe what happens when you leave one workplace and enter a new venture into another. Networking is vital in building relationships with the people that are in your life now. As you move on, never say negative things about your past, employers, coworkers, parts stores, tool trucks, business, competitors, or anyone else who you worked around. If you speak about them with others, only say positive things, if you don’t have anything good to say, then don’t say anything at all. I’ve done my best to live by this motto for the last 25 years in Automotive, and I have found that this creates a great opportunity network with others.

In my experience the young mechanics that invest in their tools show a willingness to invest in themselves and the career path they have chosen.

To succeed as an automotive technician or mechanic, you need to develop financial management skills. As a well-trained auto technician, you already have the skills to problem solve, learn systems, follow procedures, and use your communication skills.
