Plan a post-mortem session at the end of each project to discuss learnings and get feedback. Then compile a 'things to watch out for' playbook to include the learnings/feedback and keep building on it.

Be very clear about the goals and the communication of the same to all stakeholders and most importantly the team members. Also, if similar nature of projects were executed earlier then it would be a great step to look into the lessons learnt cards and be aware that similar mistakes are not repeated.

When starting a new project I think one should be prepared with the plan. All the steps from first till implementation. One should be aware of the consequences of every step. Analysis of past failures should be done so that the same mistakes are not repeated. And also the past failures should not let the energy of the new project down. Start with a positive mindset. It is very important because the way we think we end up with those kinds of results.

I'm sure there are a number of comments on this point relaying the importance of SMART goals. If you're unfamiliar you should check those out. Just as important is creating quick action START goals. What is the fastest action that could be taken to START unlocking learnings and create momentum. Each project has a series of hills you'll need to overcome and getting to peak over that first ridge will give you a lot more clarity on what the journey looks like.

One of the best statements on planning ahead came from Stephen Covey's advice from 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. It is to begin with the end in mind. Without a clear vision and written plan on how to make that vision a reality, much energy and people hours will be lost to indecision and chasing rabbit trails. Write the vision and make it plain. Advice literally written on tablets that withstands the test of time.
