There are quite a number of microphones in the Market but there are a number of factors that must be considered before choosing a Microsoft Specifications. Top of the list for me is the Budget, environment and nature of recordings. I prefer USB Microphone because he gives you the freedom to manipulate settings and they come at a good price.

Check to make sure I have reliable, quality audio equipment that will produce the best quality sound in the environment that I am recording in. Even a simple Jabra headset/mic can provide a consistent and reliable experience.

One of the best types of mics I find are USB ones that allow you to also manipulate your audio settings, such as the Elgato Wave 3 which comes with its own free audio channel program instead of having to download say Voice Meter Banana or its variants. If you are trying for music recording/voice over work/podcast mic I’d recommend just go for the XLR but a good USB can work wonders with the right audio settings. Blue Yeti is always a good beginning USB mic until you are ready to upgrade, just be aware that upgrading to an XLR will require some extra gear such as a Scarlet solo XLR to USB interface so keep that in mind for budget purposes.

Seriously! Audio settings can make or break a stream/podcast. People can forgive a below average video setting (up to a certain point) but bad audio will instantly kill a potential viewership. Voice meter banana is free to download and there are tons of YouTube vids to help you master your settings. Some mics like the Elgato Wave 1&3 come with the elgato wave audio mixer program for free which help you control your various audio channels. But seriously I cannot stress good audio enough, a cheap mic can sound great with good settings while an expensive mic without good settings can sound cheap so invest in those settings.

Making sure to have the default audio input device set to the correct microphone and subsequently finding the appropriate microphone boost level together with microphone volume on OS level can be essential how you come accross to your audience. Checking and testing these settings in the app is always a good idea. And then there are proprietary audio apps instaled together from the device driver manufacturer which might be worth checking out.

Noise reduction is a simple filter to play with, I highly recommend you use noise reduction before you play around with filters like noise gate, which if you’re not careful can cut your audio out (great for if you get loud or excited so you don’t blow ear drums out but bad if your natural voice is loud and your audio is clipped because of it)

If you are on Windows and using an Nvidia RTX video card you can use the Nvidia Noise reduction that is built into OBS (with the Nvidia Broadcast SDK) or as a standalone application called Nvidia Broadcast. It's good at dealing with a lot of background noise with very little cost of sound quality.

A pack of foam panels for your wall is a cheap effective way to improve acoustics, place them behind your mic to absorb excess noise from your voice, having something as simple as a bookcase behind you to enclose your stream area can help improve acoustics. I personally have my stream area in a corner of the room to help improve room acoustics and have foam panels on the wall in front of me to help absorb excess noise from my voice especially when I get loud during a win as well as have bookcases behind me. Having noise reduction and/or noise gate filters also helps with this as using a program like audacity you can get a baseline of your room when speaking and help remove excess noise.

There are a lot of audio filters you can use but in my experience less is better, if you can help it. Filter order is also very important. There are some wonderful guides(search "audio filter order" or "OBS filter order") that can walk you through the process.

In my experience, definitely check your audio quality using at bare minimum your webcam to record a video of yourself. If not that, check your audio settings and run tests to see if your audio is being heard by observing the audio meter while testing whilst speaking into whatever your using for your mic, or just the speakers themselves. Also, you could record a test video via whatever streaming platform you’re using. Pretty simple. They’re also great softwares that can check as well. Last but not least, check your audio drivers to see if they’re installed, corrupted, and/or need to be reinstalled.

Test your audio quality. It is good to test your audio quality before, so you may know what it is needed to avoid any issues you might have.

Whoever this Livestream is for, either you or someone else, make sure you restart whichever system you will be running beforehand and have a second device on hand. For me it is having a main presentation laptop with updates, notifications and notification sounds disabled. Try to keep this device updated, set yourself with calendar reminders.

In many cases the hardware comes first. Making certain that all audio components are properly updated for firmware, drivers and software is step one. For more skilled users, making sure an adequate sound card is installed and serviced. Then having a quality headset that both has clear speakers and clear microphone goes a long way in carrying your voice. Preferably the noise cancelling type of equipment as well as a controlled environment to account for unintended surrounding noise. Lastly, practice your presentation or voice to make sure the sounds being heard are the intended sounds.

If you are about to start a live stream and you haven't prepared as above you must accept the fact that it will sound unprofessional and possibly be inaudible. Also you want to have key points on q cards. Remember to pause strategically and include personal experiences.

Windows has a lot of audio "quirks". One thing that helps a ton when streaming is to make sure all of your inputs and outputs are set to the same bit rate and sample rate. This can be done in the advanced audio settings in Windows. Unless you have specific needs 24bit/48,000Hz is a good baseline. Some devices may only have 16-bit/48,000Hz or 16-bit/44,100Hz which is okay as long as your main inputs/outputs are the same or higher(24bit/48,000Hz).
