It is important to understand what role the Real Estate team plays at an individual company and whether that aligns with one's professional goals. In some companies, the Real Estate team merely provides transactional support (managing a portfolio, etc.) while another department (Operations) determines the real estate strategy. In others, the Real Estate team is tasked with devising a real estate strategy (i.e., own v. lease, partnerships v. going alone, site selection factors or demographics, etc.). In addition, it is important to understand what type of corporate real estate does one want to manage (retail, corporate campus, warehouse, etc.).

One important aspect to think of is that one, you will start at an entry level role, that will mean a lot of work and a lot of learning too. Second of all, all these roles described are completely different to one another and an entry level role in one of them will not qualify you to the others, so please carefully consider what you really want, ie, an operational focus, a sales focus or a finance focus before committing.

There are several options that offer an entrepreneurial environment and other options that offer a more structured, corporate environment. The smaller version of the economy offers unique aspects that not many other positions can claim. For example, I am an appraiser, but have friends who do financing, others do development, sales, and still others leasing. When together, we learn the intricacies of specific deals, tenant/owner requirements, and more. It's important research the various roles to find a good match for what you enjoy doing.

Being a dynamic and competitive market and career development sphere, it is however pertinent to assert that participants, investors should understand that the various roles are unique, hence the corresponding services and analysis skills demand for each.

One thing I've found helpful is the ability to deal with different people. People's skill will get you going. And as they say communication is the key. Patience and your will to make a mark, To be the best there is, to do all that it takes, this attitude you need to carry with yourself, the more updated you are with the market the better it turns out for you.

Skills are vital in real estate. Simply by becoming a real estate agent, you began your foundation in prelicense courses. But continuing to educate yourself, staying active in the industry, networking, understand negotiations, the finance side to a degree, openly communicating, demonstrating that the person you represent comes first in a transaction all make it clear that you are the expert.

You must continue to learn and networking is like being in a classroom of professors In this business you have a choice “ be visible or invisible”. Networking allows you not just to show up but to learn from those who have different experiences ( from those gray hair -like me ) They say each person you meet has a network estimated at 250 contacts,wake up,show up ..and network! You have an opportunity each day to meet qualified and experienced colleagues who have interesting stories to share .. if you’re interested you will join those CRE groups and expand your horizons and why not …you have nothing to lose and only something to gain !

The system may black ball me for this, but in-person human contact with real people in the real world is the only way to make meaningful progress in building out your "network". Trust me, when times get rough (and they will), those 3,000 people in LinkedIn won't save you, but the real people with whom you have worked, who have seen your work product, your ethics, your decision-making and inter-personal skills in action are the ones that will help you, lift you up and repay you for the kindness and thoughtfulness they have seen in you in the past.

You can never count on a deal to go through until the deal is completely done, and you’ll hear ‘no’ over and over until you hear yes. Don’t let yourself get down when deals don’t work, just keep grinding and you’ll wind up successful.
