You’re about to start an Architecture internship. What are the best ways to make the most of it?

Looking back at my career, I can say that it’s not easy to set goals. 1. I would advise that one must get in the firm with a learning mindset. 2. Keenly observe the different facets of the profession. 3. Carefully listen to what seniors are saying. 4. Try to understand why they do, what they do. 5. Introspect to discover what are your strengths, limitations and likings. 6. Find a mentor who can help you or whom you must emulate to reach where you want to reach (now). 7. Always remember, life’s journey is iterative. Time changes, vision changes. 8. Remain focused but always ready to adjust the sails when the wind changes direction.

For all architects who are starting their internships: Keep an open mind. You're at the beginning of your career, so maintain a receptive attitude and be willing to learn. Being open to new ideas and perspectives will help you grow professionally. Remember observing and learning. Take a close look at how more experienced architects work in the studio. Pay attention to their techniques, processes, and methodologies. Ask them questions about why they make certain design decisions or how they tackle different challenges.

The downside of being proactive in the wrong place is that you don't get heard. Sometimes, it doesn't matter how much research you do about a firm; you will get to know the people once you're there and start the interaction. Be intelligent enough to spot red flags about closed-minded individuals. Don't waste time proposing new ideas in a place where the word innovation is not part of the vocabulary. Nothing is more energy-consuming than motivating people who don't care about improving. Your time is the most valuable asset you have. Spend it wisely.
