1 Paper and pencil

For early concepts, humble accessible Post-it-notes and an ink marker rock. Storyboard software depends on so many factors from budget to pipeline. Whatever you use, it's transformed the laborious task of scanning and marking up paper boards. Software that allows you to draw freely, swap, and manipulate panels with ease is the bottom line. Get that right, and there are no wrong answers.

Pencil and paper. Procreate. Burn a stick and draw on a cave wall. It doesn't matter in the beginning. Thumbnails can be done with anything. It just depends on how you're presenting them to the client. As long as you understand how to use your visual tools – contrast, composition, and gesture – to stage your shots and move the eye, it doesn't matter what platform you use. I personally start with pencil and paper or Procreate/Fresco before I move into animatic.

From drawing and supervising storyboards over the last 15 to 20 years, Storyboard pro has been by far the most useful storyboarding tool to date. It's easy to learn and does everything it needs to to create high quality storyboards quickly. Drawing thumbs on paper is something to stay away from as it just adds another layer of "where the heck is that...." to the process. Limit the amount of moves you need to do with work. Work digitally and keep everything in one place. If there is ambiguity as to what needs to be done for a sequence, rough it out in software, at least that way your thumbnail or rough panels are avialble through shared libraries etc.

Depends on the nature of the project. If it is 2D then StoryboardPro is the best but pricey. For CG the amazing PanelForge is great and will not burn a hole in your pocket.

For me, it’s the iPad and Procreate Dreams to create animatics. This lets me show the flow and timing of the animation to the client whilst still being super quick to iterate and explore ideas. Storyboarder is a great free app for storyboards though.

I’ve been using Milanote for mood and storyboards since 2020 and can’t imagine working without it now. It’s v simple & intuitive. There aren’t too many options to change details like fonts, which is a good thing - it concentrates on the essentials needed for brainstorming. Throw all your ideas on a big Milanote canvas (stock images, rough illustrations, ideas in the wrong style but right concept) and ask your team and the client to give feedback - it’s organic and simple like creating a physical mood board.

Storyboard Pro is great, I teach it in college, but in my studio's pipeline, we do our animatics in Adobe Animate. The learning curve is higher, but the camera tools are far superior and the interface is more intuitive. SBP has some nice export features if you need to do a presentation, but we find that using Animate expedites our production process and keeps things seamless between pre-prod and production.
