You're a self-employed leadership coach. How do you make sure you have the right skills to succeed?

Every professional, when offering coaching and mentoring work, must first have a background in the area in which they work and in-depth self-knowledge of professional skills. In order for me to have tools to offer the market, I first need to have technical knowledge of the topic, and then offer the tool as an additional resource, not the other way around. The coaching and mentoring professional must be someone open to improving and who will understand the other professional's demands without judging, but offering support (technical and behavioral) to add value.

It’s always helpful to use a test to assess your strengths - like a Strengthsfinder. This way you have a third party view that measures your natural tendencies. I also highly suggest taking a Human Design assessment to understand your energy centers and what type you are. The more you get to know yourself, the better.

I know this might sound harsh to some. I recommend you focus on what you have done professionally in your career and coach from the trenches, almost like an advisor. I have seen too many coaches in my lifetime who believe they can coach anybody. That is simply not true, especially in the technology sector.

Once you've pinpointed your target group, actively connect with them and offer your services. If they show disinterest, ask why. Each conversation provides valuable insights into the skills and knowledge required, helping you identify potential gaps in your skillset.

As a self-employed "Leadership Coach", you need to assess your strengths and gaps between what is expected of you and what you can offer now. You can use classical methods for self-assessment including self refection, 360° feedback and reviews from fellow Coaches. You need to clearly understand the needs of your Clients amidst the challenges confronted by them. You need to offer tailor made processes to meet the desired objectives of your Clients.

Get a coach! Consider having a coach of your own, that can help you become a more open-minded mentor for others. This coach is not there you give you advice on the situations you’re dealing with during sessions with your clients, but rather truly to help you develop as an individual and professional.

Your focus should shift beyond traditional courses to immersive experiences. Participating in a diverse range of challenging situations, such as volunteering in leadership roles in community projects, can provide a depth of insight and practical knowledge that formal education often fails to deliver.

This cannot be overstated! Being a good leader does not make you a good leadership coach. Investing the time and resources into the proper training and certification programs (highly recommend ICF accreditation) will pay off in spades. Certifications give you 3 things: - A level of credibility that most coaches simply don’t have - Necessary tools, resources, frameworks, and strategies to help you understand the flow and mechanics of an effective coaching engagement - Invaluable training that teaches you how to achieve real, lasting results in the lives of your clients If you’re serious about coaching, invest in an ICF-accredited program, get your certification, and put in the time to get your ICF Level 1 designation at the very least.

Prioritizing learning and development is crucial for this. After identifying strengths and weaknesses, craft and personalized learning plan. Invest in resources like coaching, courses and other learning options. By staying committed to ongoing development, you maintain relevance and efficacy in guiding clients towards their leadership objectives.

Please do not experiment without proper instruction. Coaching can often do more harm than good in the hands self-proclaimed (but well-intentioned!) coaches. Remember, as a coach, you’re entrusted not only with your clients’ career development; you’re also entrusted with their personal development. You can’t have one without the other. Most accredited coaching programs have practice sessions and mentor coaching baked into the curriculum. This gives you both client feedback to help assess your impact and mentor coach feedback to help you fine-tune your skills. Highly recommend researching and investing in a coach training program to deliver maximum value and learn what NOT to do.

Previous experience in leadership positions can give coaches more credibility. However, coaches do not have to be domain experts in the field of their coachees. A well-trained coach should be able to coach anyone. The risk of experience and lots of domain knowledge is that coaches can behave more as consultants, giving advice or expressing their opinions about the client’s topic.

Be coached or mentored by coaches or mentors you love, esteem, aspire to. Choose your type of clients according to your skills. And if you haven’t been one of them in the past, make sure you spend time with your type of clients, join relevant communities, get to know about recurrent needs, desires, fears, etc.
