You’re a remote project manager. How do you keep your team motivated?

As a remote project manager, I prioritize communication, recognition, and support to keep my team motivated. Firstly, I foster a positive team culture by providing regular updates, sharing successes, and celebrating achievements. Secondly, I actively listen to team members' concerns and provide timely feedback and guidance to address any challenges they may encounter. Thirdly, I encourage collaboration and provide opportunities for professional development and skill enhancement. Fourthly, I acknowledge and appreciate their efforts through virtual team-building activities, personalized recognition, and rewards. Lastly, I ensure transparency and trust by setting clear expectations and empowering team members to take ownership of their work.

Set 1:1s with your team, and continuously understand their needs. Remember you are also there to serve the team and remove their blockers.

It is not you the only one working remote and away from your team. Everyone, more or less, feels the same way. As a team leader, prepare small things that could bond the team tighther. A virtual lunch/dinner paid by the company, a game of charades in Kahoot. But one thing that for me was refreshing was to set informal meetings with the team at Gather. Gather is a platform where you become a character of a 2D game (imagine Zelda from the 90s). You can customize yourself and have meetings inside rooms in a big house. When we had meet-ups in the Gather environment, the flow was less structured and you got to know the team better. Try it!

Not everyone is going to appreciate being asked to join a virtual team building event. The obligation to join what should be an optional event, is a minefield particularly those of us who are introvert or have anxiety. For me it's more about knowing people as individuals. Diversity of thought is so important to your project success that for me it's about getting to know that diversity. 1:1s at least initially, can be the key.

On that, I suggest scheduling regular 1-on-1 meetings with each team member. These check-ins are key for not only keeping they informed about the overall project's progress and challenges but also for keeping them motivated and engaged. This dedicated time allows for personalised support, ensuring that each team member receives the guidance and resources they need to be successful in their role. I also use these meetings to build rapport with the team, fostering an environment of trust and open communication that is essential within a remote team. Also, one thing to note is the importance to empower team members to develop their problem-solving skills, using these meetings to ensure they feel supported yet autonomous in their roles.

This is hugely driven by the company you work for and it's culture. Tap into existing systems and tools and benchmark with your other PMs as to how they use them. You are unlikely to have the ability to pay bonuses or promote but you can provide feedback to their managers.

Remote or Onsite, doesn't matter, everyone of the team should be on the same page, how is that? ?? Setting common goals & clear objectives. Conducting Effective follow up/ review meetings. Setting KPI's & Objectives and Key Results OKRs. Launching new Initiatives to break routine. Clear & efficient communication. Sharing Information, Updates and progress. Establishing clear Roles and Responsibilities. Accountability & responsibility are keys. True leader can lead a team wether he's remote or Onsite. Do you agree?
