Trying to decipher the big picture is very important for budding professionals in IT. We all live in a VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous) world however there is zero dull moments in ever changing world of IT. Lot of times we may not get a clear vision or strategy however the fundamentals remains the same and looking into bigger picture, enterprise objectives and working towards those is a clear path to growth and success. Example if you are a developer, don’t just look into the quality and speed of code you are developing and deploying but look at what product or application it is building and what value that application is delivering for business and who are the stake holders and sponsors (from both IT and Business side).

Understanding your employer's vision, mission, and values is essential. Stay informed about the latest trends and challenges in your specific industry. Identify the unique needs and expectations of your product or service end-users. By doing this, you can ensure that your IT efforts are aligned with your company's overarching goals and discover opportunities for innovation and value addition.

Anybody who has used a multi step zoom lens knows there is always a bigger picture to zoom out to. Most casual photographers go thru a couple of stages to decide the zoom that best tells their story. The same is true in the workplace. To go beyond your day-to-day picture, that you already know because of your job, consider how your boss would look at it. His/her elevated perspective gives you the next level zoom. And for the overachievers consider her bosses perspective, to zoom out further, for an even larger picture. The best part about this technique is the picture you see always has your place in context and that makes it easier for you to go beyond your job and still ensure you are aligned with the bigger picture you sit in.

Find a way to stay up on the latest tech trends, and build your technical knowledge. Learning something new every day, or if that's too much, at least weekly. Get comfortable with developing strategies that align with the business goals of your organization. Practice helps make perfect, so do as much of this as you can. As an IT professional the first thing that is important to know is that it's not all about technology. And two points that can help advance a career is: 1. Creating the ability to self-learn. Usually technology professionals tend to be shy. Teaching something complex in a simple way helps during growth, to translate a big business vision in a concrete way, and to be quicker to implement any objective.

If you want to advance your career in Technology, you have to reinvent yourself at least every five years. This is getting new training, certifications, attending conferences, taking classes for continuous self improvement. As you progress throughout your career, you have to stay relevant regardless if you been in IT for a few years or 30 years. If you don't improve and change, someone else will replace you.

As you leave your bias behind you will make new connections, easier, and have less to unlearn in acquiring the new skill. An expert mindset, when learning a new technology in a familiar domain, focuses on mapping your extensive knowledge to the new technology. In many cases, it will help you solidify the knowledge you already had as you identify gaps and adapt your know-how to the new tech. When you’re learning a new technology in a new domain, is important to realize that what you really doing is learning new domain skills and THEN new tech in that domain.

In my experience, you must be always up-to-date on innovation and new technologies: every news in the market can be a potential disruption, and your ability will be to combine new tech with existing landscape. Creativity comes combining new and old in different ways. In mid 2010s we passed from client-server towards a new world made of social, cloud, mobile, analytics (SMAC): in those days, every company in the world started re-thinking processes and systems toward the digital transformation. Nowadays, we are facing the #metaverse and #genai era, where social media evolve in a mixed reality arena, and companies are struggling to find new ways to creare value from AI: a new era is here! Let’s adapt and find always new ways to create value

GenAI has illustrated to everybody that the rate of change is never going to be as slow as it is today, it is important that we reduce the fidelity of our career plan stages the further away they are. As we learn and grow, we need to constantly be introspective on what new options have opened up for the near term and how choosing between them will impact the longer career journey. Another benefit of this approach is that, in this rapidly changing environment, it makes you ready for not one but possibly multiple changes that may be right work journey for you until you retire.

In an industry where new roles and subjects seemingly emerge every day it is probably better to have a general end goal rather than a specific path. Be flexible and prepared to switch around to move forward
