Prepare well. Must know who will interview you. Present your skills and experience with examples in your previous work. Explain which software you were using and how, and when. Tell the interviewer the issue you have faced and how you solved it. Percentage as well must be there with example.

For me, data is like a story waiting to be told, I focus on crafting a compelling story that uncovers key insights and answers important questions, using tools and methods that I briefly explain without overemphasizing. It's essential to demonstrate how the analysis leads to clear, actionable results that significantly impact financial operations. Also, I usually emphasize how data collection and pre-analysis steps can greatly influence the quality of the analysis, i've found that common challenges in these areas tend to exist across different companies. Sometimes, I prepare analysis or dashboards to present to interviewers without revealing any financial information. Instead, I share only the layout or the code used in my analysis tools.

Ensure that you keep all data confidential. Convert all numbers into percentages and ratios and present your case. Explain how your and your teams efforts helped in achieving organisational goals since each organisation will have specific targeted objectives

Budgeting and forecasting are your initial tools to showcase. Think about indices or ratios you have developed and how that helped the organization into having a more accurate view of what is or is going to happen. Also think about how you are capturing new data and how that data is being used.

To highlight my financial analysis skills in an interview, I will share specific examples of impactful projects, I will point out my proficiency with tools(softwares) demonstrate problem-solving capabilities, quantify achievements with results, to link my work to new business milestones, and discuss how I overcame challenges.

It’d be helpful to do a vertical analysis (percentage of each line of expense vs revenue) and a horizontal analysis (year over year growth/decline) on the company’s PnL during your interview prep. You’ll get a better understanding of their financials, what line items hold more weight and give you confidence while having a more informed conversation.

Behavioral interviewing calls it a STAR, I added story. This is a great way to “show not tell” someone a concrete example that illustrates the impactful skills or valuable abilities you possess. Situation, Task, Action, Results. Once you share your STAR Story in this format, make sure to translate how that benefits the company or people you are sharing it with for the interview!

Data analysis has one true purpose: aid in decision making. Which means it’s important that when presenting the analysis, do so to the right audience at the right time with the right delivery. Companies aren’t looking for people to just analyze data; stand out by showing that you understand the implications of the insights derived from the analysis.
