You're planning a training session. How can you make it more interactive and engaging?

There are many ways to make your training session more interactive and engaging, depending on your goals, audience, and resources. Here are some general tips and ideas that you can use or adapt for your training session: Use a variety of methods and formats to deliver your content, such as presentations, videos, podcasts, quizzes, games, simulations, etc. Use technology to enhance your training session, such as online platforms, tools, and apps that enable you to create, share, and interact with your content and audience. Follow up with your audience after the training session, by providing them with additional resources, feedback, and support.

Start with understanding whom you are speaking to. One size does not fit all. The best way to do this is to watch stand up comedians. Watch a series of their shows. You will see how they adapt their sketches to each audience. They change their attire. Their language. Their jokes. Their rhythm. The other way is to track politicians' speeches. They too, know how to weave their words and tune them to their audience. If you are young, they promise you jobs. If you are old, they promise you pensions. If you are a liberal, they tell you how woke they are. If you are conservative, they agree with you that the world is going to hell. Understand your audience. And then tell them what they want to hear in the way they will connect best.

The first question that comes to mind is simple: WHY are you planning these lessons? Have there been some requests for more learning? From whom? Special groups / departments? Senior execs? ?Have you noticed some "missing links" in someone's work? ?Will this experience directly help fill in gaps? ?Have you held other workshops that went well ... or didn't? Do you know why? Funny how that word keeps coming up, isn't it? But without knowing all the reasons to hold workshops / classes ... there's a good chance of negative experiences.

Ditch the lecture drone and turn your training into a playground! Spark curiosity, encourage dialogue, gamify learning, get bodies moving, leverage tech meaningfully, weave stories, listen to feedback, and celebrate progress. Create a space where participants feel valued, heard, and challenged. Learning shouldn't be a chore, it should be an adventure!

Before going into the session find out if you can ask the participants what questions they would like to ask. When you have 4 or 5 solid questions you can build your presentation around them. Many times the audience has the same questions, but do not want to ask in large groups. This way no-one will feel that they are being judged by their questions. Should you not be able to get questions from the group ask the individual that is bringing you to the event to give you three top concerns of the group.

For PPT, I use the "0-0-0" rule. Simply put: remove all slides. Use other techniques to convey your knowledge: - Whiteboarding - Demonstrations - Labs - Customer stories - News The courses that generated more engagement and the best feedback had exactly zero slides. Once you remove the slides, you can move to the next level: Teaching without notes and papers. It has happened to me that I have described 30 exercises on the whiteboard without a single note. I view my role in presentations - especially virtual ones - as facilitator rather than lecturer. I can share key points, and guide conversations, but usually I find that audiences are collectively really knowledgeable. So, I design sessions with a mix of large and small group Q&As, breakout groups, and sharing/report outs. You can learn that your audience doesn't engage with certain types of visual material, or gets confused by a specific way of delivery (maybe language). and you can evaluate yourself by keeping yourself under the loop of improvement and self-assessment and by asking for direct feedback during specific parts of the training and at points you already thought might be tough to grasp since the beginning. It also doesn't take much of an effort to recognize a confused face, take the clues.

As a business coach that has strong project management experience, I believe that evaluating and improving is a fundamental part of anything we do, and it's done in 2 main ways. It is important that you add examples and situations from their perspective and in their field. For instance, I am trade lawyer and was training mid-level officials on Trade law. These officials worked in only one specific product department, whereas the ambit of trade is huge and covers all products. So I tailor-made my examples, questions for mock exercise, situations based on their specific product and not gave them other examples. This helped them grasp the concept and legal aspect more quickly. Nothing beats practice. If you've gone through the materials before, you're delivery will be more confident and polished. Consider running through your presentation and speaking in front of a mirror. It's old school advice, but it really works. An actress sells her story because she's rehearsed the scene before. People will know if you're "winging it", and it will show in your delivery.
