Ask for the worst experience, they could imagine. Sometimes you discover things that you would have proposed (e.g., wrong food, disliked colors...)

First, I like to get to know my clients, their idea of a luxury vacation, their dream luxury destination, their travel preferences, the kind of activities they'd love to engage in and their budget of an idea luxury vacation. I love to tailor a client's itinerary specifically to their personality.

Try to tailor as much as possible and don't guess about their interests. The planning before the arrival is key to have good information about what they like & dislike. Surprises could be great as an X factor. But needs to have some certainty from our part to make things work.

Luxury travel is an exclusive personal experience. You have to ask open ended questions so you can narrow it down to to the client's specific preferences. Here are are a few example questions: How would you describe your ideal vacation? What was the worse experience you had on a vacation? What made your last luxury vacation special? Once you get to the specifics, it's up to you to design the perfect vacation based on the answers you received and the emotions the client wants to feel.
