You're planning an event and want to reduce your carbon footprint. How can you make it happen?

I feel the most important one of the green items mentioned is the venue’s waste management and recycling practices. As the event planner, you can help by mapping your event’s various waste streams and identifying how you (and any vendors) can help collect the waste/recycle items and put them in the correct waste infrastructure to get them to a place of disposal/reuse/recycling. Waste mapping can include items like flooring/carpeting; plastic/shrink wrap; wood/rubber/metal; food from plates; cardboard; etc. By waste mapping, you may also find set up items that are not really needed - nice to haves but not need to haves.

It depends on where you live, but companies have started already to be aware of their carbon footprint and some are trying to be better in reducing it so best way is to talk to potential venue places and see what are they doing in lowering CO2 footprint. My suggestion is if they start to laugh at you when you ask them that question to just say Thank you and move to the next one.

I'd also ensure all materials used are recyclable or compostable and aim for a zero-waste approach by planning accurately to avoid excess. Incorporating virtual elements could also reduce travel needs for some attendees, further lowering the event's overall carbon footprint. Engaging attendees in these efforts by communicating the event's eco-friendly focus enhances awareness and participation!

Digital communication has become an important part of communication if not the most important one. Creating a QR code designed just for that event is something you can actually do by yourself. Online surveys the same. For me,digital communication gives much more wider options how to reach your audience than papper one,so consider digital communication also in terms of profitability.

One thing I found useful is the digital arena, and post covid the boom has been immense. For example, a crafts workshop with an artist specialising in creating recycled artwork. Attendees learn to make an item while recycling, which will positively impact the environment.

To reduce your event's carbon footprint, prioritize encouraging green behaviors among attendees and implementing sustainable practices throughout the planning process. Start by selecting eco-friendly venues that prioritize energy efficiency and waste reduction. Encourage attendees to carpool, use public transportation, or opt for eco-friendly transportation options like bike sharing. Minimize paper usage by utilizing digital programs, event apps, and electronic signage. Offer recycling and composting stations to divert waste from landfills, and opt for reusable or biodegradable serving ware and utensils.

This the best way to reduce carbon footprints. Just incentiwise the Good Behaviors and mass will follow them for getting incentives. Give different range of incentives to people who are coming by foot, bicycle, public transport, or using full capacity of vehicle.

I just want add my opinion to change the perspective of looking this point. you can keep data in chart form to compare the emission of carbon footprints through various events and compare the whole data with your emission. You can promote your good work for offsetting Carbon Footprints and also get promoted by other organisations.
