I believe Inclusive Architecture should not even be another area of design, rather each kind of space should be designed adhering to every end user group regardless of the age or the physical challenges, this includes the universal access, sensitive thinking, safety and comfort, community engagement etc Rather than discussing what comprises Universal Design guidelines we should start following it as how we follow any other by-laws and rules. It needs to be normalised in design practice just like other standards, only then can we talk about inclusivity in all forms of built environment and not just one building. It starts when one person gets down on the road, uses the public transport reaches the office and comes back home.

Inclusive design can be approached in two ways. First is compliance-driven: the architect develops a design, and later, the team references guidelines like the ADA to add minimum accessibility requirements. This approach often feels like an afterthought, merely checking a box to meet standards. The second approach is rooted in a genuine passion for inclusivity. Here, accessibility is integral to the design from the outset. The architect envisions a space where everyone feels welcome, not just where accessibility is possible but where it is seamlessly integrated. This approach ensures that inclusivity is not an add-on but a fundamental aspect of the design, creating spaces that are genuinely welcoming for all. I prefer the latter! and you?

To understand needs for inclusive design. Pay attention to what others say, ask clarifying questions, and restate what you've heard. Observe behaviours, put yourself in others' shoes and try to understand their perspectives, determine challenges, difficulties, or frustrations. Additionally, consider the Physical needs/Basic requirements like food, water, shelter, and safety.

Excellent recommendation; the purpose of occupied buildings is to provide a safe and comfortable environment. This can only be accomplished understanding who will be occupying the building and how they will be using it.

Il y a 2 ans, je devais renouveler ma certification PMP (Project Management Professional). La procédure est simple, il fallait obtenir 60 PDUs (Professional Development Unit). Mais cette seule idée me faisait remettre en cause la pertinence de ce processus et l'importance de ma certification. Malgré tout, je me suis engagé à le faire par principe et j'ai été plus que surpris. Il y a des moyens divers d'obtenir des PDUs sans fournir réellement d'effort, mais j'ai choisi de le faire correctement (par principe) et je peux dire aujourd'hui que chaque PDU obtenu fut une connaissance de plus acquise, une compétence de plus développée. La seule constance de ce monde étant le changement : l'apprentissage continue est la clé de notre évolution.

Continuous learning is critical in ensuring the needs of your client are met. Client needs keep changing from time to time given the evolving technology. For instance the way hospitals were being designed 10 years ago is not the same as it is being designed at the moment. To keep up with the ever evolving protocols for infection prevention control for instance, a lot of continuous learning is needed to ensure the designs produced align with the current needs/ protocols/technology.
