You're overwhelmed with conflicting feedback on your resume. How do you determine the best changes to make?

It is very frustrating to receive conflicting advice on your resume. I always suggest asking 1- 2 trusted sources for their opinion and then ultimately you have to choose what you feel is best for you. Asking too many people creates too much conflict in your decision making process. Understand your goals and structure your resume in a manner that best helps you reach those goals.

If you've received multiple pieces of feedback on your resume, it might be because you're not fully familiar with its content. That's why I didn't recommend a resume template; using one might prevent you from understanding your own resume and make it look average and generic. Instead, try this approach: 1. List all basic job requirements and align them with your resume content. 2. Identify key performance indicators for your career field and include your relevant achievements. 3. Organize your resume with key qualifications on page 1, chronological job experience on page 2, and personal reputation highlights on page 3. By thoroughly understanding your resume, you'll be better equipped to respond to feedback. Best of luck!

Who is giving you the feedback? A resume writer who is offering you a "free" review, and then tries to sell you something? Your friends who have never had an lengthy experience in recruiting? An Amazon book on resume writing written by a consortium of "certified" resume writers? The best source of feedback is those with extensive recruiting experience. Identify those in your network who are recruiters who might be willing to review your resume for free. Or seek out an experienced recruiter who has paid resume review services. Better still: Hiring managers who hire for your role.

You will always find conflicting advice on resumes - some believe you have to customise every application, some do not. What counts is, which one gets results? I've found the best method is including 3-4 Capability stories on your first page of your resume and then you don't need to customise each time. This approach serves to a) humanise you, b) build credibility and c) spark interest that other candidates don't highlight. A majority of my clients get call backs when they follow my advice.

Ask 5-10 or so Resume Editing and Writing professionals for their advice on your resume and you will get 5-10 different opinions. Too many have a resume content that focuses on their duties and skills only ( Resumes 'should' not be everything to everyone) Make sure your resume is fully focused in the direction regarding the job that you want. Resumes that are “everything to everyone” are not effective. Your resume content should focus around your professional accomplishments and impact you are making and made in previous roles; E.G: what did you do to make your employer better?

It always comes back to your personal sweet spot. What is your brand? What is your value proposition for the opportunities you are interested in pursuing? And what are those opportunities. If you know these items, your sweet spot is where they come together and will define what is important and what is not. Use it to focus on what you need to track and include in your personal story.

Yep it is indeed pivotal to understand your goals when it comes to your resume. 1. If you are pivoting, mirror the transferable skills on the JD to your CV. Remember that you want to get an interview. The fasted way is for your CV to meet the spec. 2. If you are moving laterally. Consider the role title naming conversions in your area of expertise. If not sure use chat GBT or open Ai to see what’s out there. Due to high demands in the market, make sure that at a glance a recruiter can see your skills relative to the role. 3. Make sure that you align, format, spell check your resume and cover letter and that these are directed at the right company. Otherwise you risk a decline due to not paying attention to detail. You’ve got this!

Ensure that any changes align with your career goals and the job you’re targeting. Your resume should clearly convey your aspirations and how your skills and experience make you a strong candidate.

I encourage people to move from a Responsibilities or task-based resume to an Achievements based resume. For most job titles, people already know the responsibilities or duties but what they don't know is what you did to go above and beyond at each job. Describing what you achieved at your old workplace is a great way to tell them cool stuff you did that wasn't required of you.

Make sure your skillset is relevant to the role you are going for. If it specifies a certain skill (especially in the beginning of the description, or repeatedly), make sure you have that. If you don't, move on to the next job. Why waste your time, or theirs?

A few things that can help with clarity and make a great first impression: -Hit the reader with the “good stuff” early on in your resume. If they don’t read it in the first few seconds it may never be seen. -Edit your resume ruthlessly. Determine if that sentence or word needs to be included. Get to the point. -Eliminate technical jargon that the reader may not understand. You want to impress them with your accomplishments, not confuse them. Keep your resume simple and to the point. Deliver your value proposition “above the fold” so that it will actually be read.

In my opinion, feedback from professionals is important, however, I always advise on considering only what makes sense for you. Choose a professional that resonates with you and stick to his advice for a while. See how it goes. Stop seeking other opionions - this only generates more confusion and decision making fatigue. If you have no results, restart the process and see what changes could work for you.

From my perspective the only metric that really matters is the number of applications to interview ratio. If you applying for 100 applications and getting less than 10 interviews then your strategy needs to be tweaked. Even with my own clients we keep tailoring our resume for every application to test out different ideas and give us the best chance of landing an interview. ‘success leaves clues’ as Tony Robbins would say so find someone that is consistently getting the results you are after and not just a shiny rewrite of your resume. We are all different so finding someone you resonate with is also important as well on your career transition journey

The proof is in the pudding! Once you have revised your resume and you are now showcasing your unique value proposition. Your effectiveness measure becomes: 1. Application vs shortlisted and interviewed. 2. When you share it with recruitment agencies. What feedback you get from them. Recruiters know and appreciate a great CV. It makes it easier to position you in the market. Many of my clients get great feedback around how concise and to the point their resumes are without losing the essence of who they are and what they have done in their roles to add value to the businesses that they have worked in!

Unless you have recruiters in your network be careful of who you test your CV with. The best way to test your CV is to apply for roles you really don't care about. The purpose of the CV is to get you an interview. If certain improvements get you an interview great. However, I'm a fan of always customising your CV to suit every role you apply for.

Consider your resume a dynamic document - change it constantly based on what works and ALWAYS be aware of what doesn’t. Treat it scientifically. Change one thing at a time so you can track how effective it is. I’d consider sending out blocks of 10 - then analyze the data and adjust accordingly.

This is extremely subjective because some people will love a CV that others might hate. Equally, aside from the aesthetic qualities, in my view it is also dependent upon the professionalism and diligence of the assessor, because most contingency recruiters do not have appropriate industry knowledge, so when they skim CVs, it is probable they will eliminate perfectly qualified candidates. One could have invented the iPhone but never be selected because a contingency recruiter could not be bothered to look that far back. My only advice: concentrate on one’s accomplishments, and ensure one’s grammar and spelling are perfect; then apply to roles you have knowledge and expertise within. Applying to those you do not is a waste of everyone’s time.

It's important to remember that a resume has several "target audiences" (this is what makes writing them so hard!) There's the ATS, searching for keywords and titles, there's the recruiter or TA who often operates quite similarly (unless they're an expert in the industry/roles they work on) and lastly, there's the hiring manager, who (hopefully)knows the role really well.
