One of the things that I find helpful is inclusion of the entire team in the Construction Safety and Phasing Plan (CSPP) development to better understand the operational impacts, challenges, and mitigations. I like my contractor to submit a site specific safety plan (SSSP). This way you can see how they plan to manage safety on the project before they start. You can review and comment ahead of time vs. fixing something that didn’t work along the way. Also you should have regular scheduled meetings to review the safety plan to ensure they are on track.

Yearly training on job site and equipment use.all sign off. Anything new, give immediate training on use and storage, everyone signs off.

Normally on an active construction site, you will have 3 debriefing, one on the arrival before the works start, one after lunch and one at the end of the job as pre-preparation for the next day. Besides this, a Facility needs to keep routine meetings with the coworkers that are affected by the works. I’ve found effective providing a weekly stand up meeting close by o the OH&S board with daily emails updates, in order to decrease the disruption caused by excess meetings.

I hear over and over upper management members of a department or team talk about changes and updates etc. When questioned by team members, they don't know the subject or have the answers. Secondly, it's fine have preshift/ yourself, you can then have those healthy, effective conversations with workers. It's not all about sitting in an office dictating things.

Safety is a cultural shift that requires everyone to think and act professionally and safely. The old saying a tidy site is a safe site is very true; the culture and leadership of the onsite team is vital to promoting an open communication culture where safety observations will be shared and acted upon. Good sites are tidy and well organised from the moment you set foot on the site, the way that labour is managed / access and egresses the site is professional and respectful, everyone knows what to do and when and there are clear organisation messages available. Poor sites I have experience have slack attitudes to safety where there is a fear to highlight issues .... I have been told "what the f@@@ does it have to do with you?"
