Just a few question examples: How does successful collaboration look like for you? How, where and how often do we present the progress and share updates? Stand-ups, weekly demos, biweekly sprints? Do we expect immediate response (especially when parties are in different time zones)?

If you understand the technical component of the project you will be able to take better strategic decision: choosing the right technology stack, evaluating the feasibility of proposed solutions, or the implications of technical debt. If you will understand the capabilities and the limitations of used technologies then you will be able toto have a different approch in front of the customer. Understanding the capabilities and limitations of the technologies involved in your project allows you to set realistic expectations for your stakeholders.

People often take their own cultural norms for granted, but when working with people from different cultures you can't take anything for granted. e.g. Asians may find it hard to say "no," so ask open-ended questions! Conversely, some Western cultures' directness can be seen as abrasive. Accept these differences and try to find common ground where everyone feels valued enhances collaboration and project success. Vivi de perto essa experiência em um projeto quando um de nossos fornecedores nos enviou um técnico de origem israelense, que por motivos religiosos, guardava o Shabat (o que implicava em horas de trabalho diferentes das nossas) e usava um Quipá, que conflitava com o código de vestimenta da nossa empresa. Getting the best deal is not just about getting the cheapest price you can. The service you buy needs to be fit for purpose and scalable for future business demands. The price you pay needs to be fair. The partner needs to have a commercially viable deal to allow them to invest and grow themselves. Ultimately benefitting you. Too often partners have been beaten down on price and in doing so bring very specific on what they will and won’t provide. As soon as there is a need to amend you’re dragged into contract renegotiation and potential disputes.

To succeed in any Outsourcing project, the most important thing is solid Requirements Management. Only when requirements are clear and success criteria is agreed, there is a chance to be successful with good Project Management. It is not my opinion, most research points in this direction.

IT Outsourcing for Managed Services and Outsourcing for Projects both require significant detailing of requirements and expectations. Whilst Scope, Time and Budget are fundamental for Projects, both require vigilence to ensure each party believes fair value is being exchanged. I subscribe to the "Valued Supplier" and not "Trusted Partner" terminology - there is almost always no exchange of Services therefore a Supplier who goes above and beyond and consistently meets or exceeds your expectations provides a rewarding and valuable service. Also consider the Outsourcers who are also willing to working collaboratively with 'your' other Suppliers. If sponsor this, the rewards for all parties will be significant and material.

This is a loaded topic so I am going to assume that you are outsourcing "commoditized" IT services. If that is the case you may want someone who is experienced in reviewing and negotiating contracts of this type. You want strong and effective vendor management skills. Someone who speaks and understands what the vendor is doing and can hold them accountable.
