Other PdM tools we found very helpful in at our power generation plants include: 1. Ultra Sound equipment for locating high frequency noise created by damaged rolling element bearings, lack of lubrication in bearings, and pressurized air, gas, or liquid leaks. 2. Gas Find camera used to locate natural gas leaks throughout our facilities. An astonishing number of natural gas leaks, small and large, were located and repaired at our plants using this technology. This is not only a money saving tool, but some leaks found were also potential safety issues. 3. Corona imagers used on high voltage bushings, insulators, disconnects, etc. to locate contaminated insulation material creating an environment conducive to a flashover.

I absolutely agree…both, preventive maintenance and predictive maintenance are both critical to a well balanced maintenance program. Also, be sure all personnel are trained well enough to know the difference between preventive and predictive maintenance. They should also be aware of the capabilities of the predictive tools available even if they are not the users of the PdM equipment.
