You're organizing a fundraising event training. How do you engage volunteers with varying experience levels?

To start with you need to understand the different levels and capacity of your volunteers and group them accordingly. Beginners get to start with the basic training and are assigned basic tasks to help them build. Tasks could include, registration, coming up with content ideas, drafting questions, amongst others. Intermediates are assigned the more difficult tasks like designing application forms, analysing data, planning, and so on. The professionals or advanced volunteers can manage the different teams and supervise. It's all about meeting everyone at their level. However, ensure that everyone understands the aim and goal of the fundraising event and how they play a role in it.

When organizing a fundraising event training, engaging volunteers of varying experience levels is key to success. As a member and former President of the Accra Labone Leo Club I focused on inclusivity and empowerment. I paired seasoned volunteers with newcomers, fostering mentorship and collaboration. Clear communication, role-specific training, and recognizing everyone's contributions keep the team motivated. Interactive sessions and feedback loops ensure continuous learning and improvement. By valuing each volunteer's unique perspective, we created a cohesive, driven team ready to make a meaningful impact.

By tapping into each volunteers strength you maximize their ability to work, feel confident, satisfied, accomplished with their job assignment. As well as a sense of being appreciated.

You need to understand that your volunteers have different skills sets hence it's important to prepare for different levels of skills. It simply means you need to do differentiation during your training. It's not going to be one training for all available persons.

One thing I’ve learned in my 9 years of being a volunteers management consultant is that Volunteers need an executive mind shift, which is simply when a volunteer sees themselves first as DONORS especially when they are to be in the fundraising team. Every one who gives their time and skills to a cause is automatically a donor/sponsor and should see themselves as such, that way, it’s easier for these selfless individuals to drive the fundraising spirit and hit your goal. Of course role assignments and tailored trainings work but nothing beats a mind shift about seeing yourself as the DONOR you’re about to reach out to for support, the interaction and commitment is different on this level.
