I prioritize inclusivity by: 1. Engaging Stakeholders Early & Intentionally – making sure to involve diverse voices from the start, i.e., reaching out to community leaders, grassroots organizations, and individuals with lived experiences relevant to the event. This ensures the planning process reflects a range of perspectives and needs. 2. Removing Barriers to Participation – consider accessibility in all forms—physical, financial, linguistic, and cultural. This could mean offering sliding-scale pricing, providing interpretation services, or choosing a venue that’s easily accessible by public transport. Inclusivity isn’t just about inviting people—it’s about making sure they feel genuinely welcomed, represented, and valued.

To ensure inclusivity in the community event, I will keep all stakeholders in the loop from the very beginning. Involving everyone early on enhances their sense of ownership and participation, which is key to fostering inclusivity. I will actively identify and acknowledge each stakeholder’s views, ensuring that everyone’s voice is heard and considered. This approach will help in building a collaborative environment where each individual feels valued, leading to better engagement and a more inclusive event experience.

Outline what the event is about, who the target audience is, and what defines the success of the event. Brainstorm who would benefit from participating and invite them directly. Think of ways to engage and involve people during the event through activities that are not intrusive, obstructive, or overly synthetic. Make sure to talk to some of the participants before the event to understand their perspectives, interests, and needs, using design thinking interview methodology and adjust accordingly your approach.

Inclusivity in community events requires intentional planning to ensure equal access, diverse representation, and meaningful participation, especially in a country like South Africa, where we have 12 official languages, including South African Sign Language (SASL), communities with varying socio-economic standings and those who use Braille. ? Engage diverse voices in planning that represents diverse ethnic groups, ages, genders, and socio-economic backgrounds, including people with disabilities. ? Ensure Equal Access to Information. ? Provide clear, consistent messaging to avoid information dilution. ? Offer Multiple Ways to Participate. ? Establish an Efficient Feedback Loop. ? Acknowledge & Support Participation.

Consider where and when you are having the event- Is the event space accessible? In a community and space where all will feel safe and comfortable? Avoids holidays and worship days for all faiths?
