1 Plan ahead

Before you start working on an OR project, you need to have a clear understanding of the problem, the objectives, the constraints, and the criteria for evaluating the solutions. You also need to identify the data sources, the methods, the tools, and the resources that you will use. Planning ahead can help you avoid wasting time on irrelevant or redundant tasks, and also help you anticipate potential risks and challenges. A good plan can also help you communicate your approach and expectations to your clients or stakeholders, and get their feedback and approval.

OK, nobody is going to like this one, but I learned it from an old dude when I was pretty young. STOP PRODUCING REPORTS. Over time, organizations make reports to address specific problems. (Imagine Machine 27 keeps shorting out). So they build reports to track all kinds of information...until they finally learn that Machine 27 shorts out when ever Pump 18 kicks on. Then they fix the problem...but they keep collecting the data and reporting it. The report is pushed to the back of a long list of other information. The trick my old mentor used was just to skip reporting on Machine 27...see if anyone notices. If they don't skip again. If someone gets upset, do the report next time. Bottom line: Do only what benefits decision makers.

En todo proceso productivo ya sea de elaboración de productos o prestación de servicios tenemos un elemento que es imposible de evitar, este elemento es el cuello de botella. Ahora bien, identificar su origen y reducir su efecto es un modo de producir mas en menos tiempo; pero como el cuello de botella es inevitable, debemos tener la inteligencia para atacar de inmediato el nuevo que surge. Con la planificación de la producción podemos medir la temperatura de nuestros procesos y asignar los recursos necesarios para minimizar los efectos de los cuellos de botella.

En mí día a día, y tomando en cuenta siempre la relación e interdependencia entre los procesos, el Diagrama de Pareto y el ciclo de mejora continua que nace a partir de la matriz de Eisenhower han resultado ser herramientas muy útiles para organizar el trabajo cuando me he visto presionado por distintas tareas.
