You're a new teacher in a school with an outdated curriculum. How can you make the most of your situation?

From my earlier experience as a Student in Govt School in Odisha, I used to observe my teacher's strategy for this. Some of my teachers not only restricted themselves to my State board curiculum, they compared it with National curriculum like CBSE/ICSE, and identified if any missing elements in state curriculum.

An outdated curriculum needs an updated teacher. The gaps in the curriculum can be masked by the adequate knowledge and sufficient training of the educators.

You know what they say, if it's not broke, don't fix it! So, just roll in a dusty old TV and play VHS tapes from the '80s. Start every morning with a thrilling game of 'Guess the Century' to keep the students on their toes. It's like Jeopardy, but with more togas and powdered wigs. Why not introduce telegrams as a means of classroom communication? Nothing says 'cutting-edge' like tapping out messages in Morse code. And lastly, for a bit of interdisciplinary flair, combine PE and geography by having students run laps while reciting all the countries in alphabetical order. It's a win-win

What a fantastic situation to find yourself in! An opportunity together feedback and views of stakeholders in preparation of embracing change. Make the curriculum work for the learners you are serving what do you want them to get out of it? How do you meet their needs?

I'd enhance it by incorporating up-to-date resources, real-world examples, and technology. Encouraging critical thinking and collaboration among students, while seeking professional development opportunities myself, would ensure the curriculum remains relevant and engaging. By supplementing with contemporary materials, fostering inquiry, and leveraging technology, I'd strive to provide a dynamic learning experience that prepares students for the modern world.

In a standard school system, curriculum follows the standards set by some government agencies which could be department of education or similar. If one teacher thinks the curriculum is outdated, is it probably a common sentiment. While trying to deliver the content to studen in innovative ways, networking with other schools, teachers could be a parallel step to make the changes at bigger level for long term. Short term goals can include bridging the gaps with more inclusive content based on one’s knowledge and understanding but long term goal might point more towars policy change at higher levels.

In working with many schools, I remind teams that there are multiple leaders in their buildings. They often are educators who have a following and audience when they speak! Discussing these improvements as a team and proactively looking for solutions as a collective can be incredibly helpful. This will allow teams to implement various findings and support their findings with results.
