One thing I have found helpful is to discover early on who are the informal leaders and influencers. And, of course, to discover the functional and dysfunctional norms ... the informal rules that either support organization objectives or work against them. There are also informal rewards, systems and structures that the excellent leader must learn. These often work against the formal ones!
