As an introvert networking events are nerve wracking for me but a couple of things I have found useful. 1. If I find myself in a group discussion I challenge myself to be the first to speak. When your are first to go there is no comparison, yet, and everyone will be so grateful that you broke the ice. 2. A top networker I know (Genelle if she's reading!) said treat it as a game. Award yourself points for speaking to others. Her top opener line is a diamond of a tip: what brought you here? Why is it good? It's an open question, it gets to something emotive, it offers a chance for you to offer up a response either in rapport or provide a different reason why you came, and there you go, the chat commences! I can confirm it works! 10 points!

Another way is to reach out and work jointly on a project which will benefit stakeholders and also give you an opportunity to learn. Volunteer to share your expertise in a forum/ panel discussion, sharing ideas which can be implemented in the near future. By volunteering, making a proposal to join hands/ share your skills sets you can make a positive difference, gain new insights and touch base with like-minded people.
