You’re a new graduate in Engineering Management. How can temporary work help you develop your career?

Temporary work can also be available inside corporations. Don't limit yourself to freelancing or official opportunities; you may find opportunities within your company. Expose your intentions and make yourself available to help.

Temporary work allows a new grad to gain experience that likely leads to increased confidence and demonstrates the abilities to learn processes, adhere to procedures, and meet planned objective KPI’s. This could potentially bridge the gap that companies see on your resume and give them more of a reason to express interest in you. Meanwhile, consider that a company may not be prepared to commit to a new grad for a full time permanent job because hiring a candidate who can’t achieve outcomes is a costly mistake. If it’s the best choice you have to obtain experience for your desired career path, it may be worth exploring temporary relevant work over something higher paying and/or ongoing if it doesn’t fit in with your long term goals.

- in my experience temporary work will open door to permanent work if someone put extra efforts into his/her assignment. It is important to improve your visibility. While working on temporary work , offer your assistance to senior management or middle management to perform the task which they think can be delegated to others like consolidating input into report , presentation preparation and offer support on some latest technology tool where experienced employee may have less exposure . People like those who go beyond extra mile and problem solver. Having positive attitude for all learnings is important . Be courteous to all members. Your behavior also makes you accepted and liked by team mates . Energy can never be destroyed??

One thing not being said here is that you probably shouldn’t go into engineering management without exposure to engineering. Management sounds good, and the pay looks good, but it’s incredibly difficult and often lacks the rewarding experience that you find from being an engineer. If you went back to school to learn engineering management, and you’ve got experience as a Lead or Senior, talk about your experiences mentoring. Remember, you don’t need a title to be a leader of people. So leverage wherever you’re at and offer support to those in need. In Engineering Management, so succeed when others succeed. It is a give first, ask never, environment. You must have a calling to serve to be truly successful. Good luck!
