You're a new executive manager. How do you build a network that will help you succeed?

The first 90 days are critical. You need to be confident and consistent. If at all possible, observe/ask questions and learn what your position entails and do not make changes for change sake. In 90 days you will know your people and the organization enough to team with your crew to change and adapt to accomplish the objectives you have been given. Find mentors and seasoned hands in the organization by which you seek knowledge and recommended changes. You are a servant leader, ensure you serve everyone on the team consistently. This means taking in all opinions on changing processes, systems and people. It is my experience if you serve your people well, they will get the mission done to standard.

My suggestions are: 1. Spend your first 30 days learning, asking questions (what's working and what needs to be changed), learning the culture and connecting with people within your company. 2 Next connect with people external to your company, clients, prospective clients, vendors, people within the industry. 3 Focus on your talents (areas where you are excellent all the time) and find people that excel on the areas where you are weaker that are willing and able to assist.

All of us know " your network defines your networth". And to generate the networth you need to invest. And while building your network it's not money that you need invest but time that you invest in your network is more important. Authenticity is basic building block of any network you are trying to build.

Before you define targets and build your network I strongly recommend to do a self check, what can I offer, why should the others be happy to have me in their net work and vice versa. It is all about give and take. Those people who just want to enter the career elevator without sharing their own assets might fail.

From my experience, cultivating a diverse network across all organizational levels and beyond has been pivotal for professional growth and fostering a collaborative workplace culture. Building relationships with seasoned professionals for mentorship, including junior staff, industry players, business partners, professional groups has provided valuable insights. Using platforms like LinkedIn, I expanded my network by contributing my thoughts and through engaging discussions. Launching the LeadHERS Lean-in circle last year enabled me to support emerging professionals, investing in their growth while forging valuable connections. My advice as you research who to network with is, embrace individuals of varying backgrounds and career stages.

Once that the firts step is done that setting your goals, the next goal is to look for those people that fit with your personality and objectives. it is then natural to look around yourself for this. You can also do that by attending industry events, conferences, and seminars so as to meet professionals that fit your standard. Attending relevant events in your field and actively engage with attendees by participating in discussions, asking questions, and exchanging contact information is also a good things

Definitely an important step which many either ignore or let their status come in the way, they feel they are in important positions and others should come to them which in some case is alright but not always. It is so important that you go down to your contacts, meet them one-to-one, listen to their stories, build that network of trust and understand, get to know the key people from bottom-up, note the processes and communications, it’s in the little details from your field or customer facing networks that you can learn and work around. You can actually understand what works and what needs reorganising or prioritising. Your contacts should be varied across every field of your work.

Once you've outlined your networking objectives, it's imperative to identify individuals to make allies in your professional pursuits while remaining genuine and honest in your interactions, you lay a solid groundwork for building a robust and mutually beneficial network. It’s key to establishing trust and credibility within your network, while also ensuring diversity of perspectives and backgrounds. Building a network effectively requires time and energy in researching your contacts, you lay a strong foundation for building a robust and supportive network. Engaging with professional communities participating in discussions and attending events can foster meaningful connections with like-minded individuals from diverse backgrounds.

After getting and taking some contact the next step is to initiate the conversation but knowing you have carefully studied the person with whom you are talking to. Initaing conversation can be done via telephone, sms, whatsapp, email or even through some event. At this level, authenticity is key to building meaningful relationships in your network. Be genuine in your interactions, share your experiences and insights openly, and show genuine interest in getting to know others and their perspectives.

It’s always good to know what inspires what motivates people. If the personal values connect well, with the company values and the task does fit the motivation, it’s a win spending enough time and effort to get this balanced as a key to success.

Depending on the situation, one of the approaches would be: In collaboration with your team: 1. Identity who the internal and external stakeholders are. 2.Formulate a stakeholder management plan. 3. Gain buy-in on the plan from employees. 4. Implement the stakeholder management plan. 5. Measure results against the plan. 6. Amend the plan if required to do so.

Maintaining the relationshif is really the key at this level that is maintaining regular communication with your network contacts by following up after networking events, sending personalized messages, and staying engaged with their professional updates and achievements. Building and nurturing relationships takes time and effort, so prioritize staying connected with your network.

Customer intimacy is a key element in maintaining and growing a successful relationship over long horizon. Seeking feedback along this journey is a way to ensure the relationship endures, not only through the good times, but the challenging times. It’s also one where active listening comes to the forefront and especially important to capture peoples feedback correctly.

Join a professional association that helps with your continuing development as well as networking. Build networks with your industry & professional cohorts. Attend events, publish articles on linked in and other sources. Good networks are built with people you trust and who can mutually benefit from the relationship.

Joining Professional Associations and Groups did personally help me big time. Make sure you become actively involved by attending meetings, seminars, and networking events organized by these groups to meet like-minded professionals, stay informed about industry trends.

I understand that this is mainly focused on external network building. As a new leader in an organization, I do believe it is important to expand and diversify your internal network. I recommend getting engaged in employee resource and representation groups. A great way to expand your internal network and gain a better perspective on the organization and its people.

Make sure you get exposed to other industries. Too often I see executives having tunnel vision. Don’t only build your network with the ‘common’ people around you, but expand. Go and interact with people that think complete different. Those type of interactions often lead to new insights, to things that haven’t been done before in the industry, to new innovations. This will also help to better understand different perspectives.

Building a network is not the end by itself! Rather, it is just a means and a by-product of genuine connections with people of shared interests and a selfless desire to share knowledge within your network and help your connections with what you can (without expecting anything back!). Somehow, "building a network" has the connotation that one is going out and exchanging visiting cards and somehow "building" one's network...that's just not how it works! And yes... making withdrawals before making deposits, i.e., asking for favors without investing is a sure sign that you don't quite understand networking!

Networking is an enduring journey. To achieve success, embrace the process, refrain from hasty judgments, and actively contribute. Remember, valuable lessons can be gleaned from every corner of life.

In my experience, it is wise to understand that as an executive leader, your results healthy or otherwise, depends on your ability to respect your team, your willingness to nurture and mentor what you have learned, earn trust and respect. Dont ask anyone to perform the functions of your industry; that you would not, or have not done yourself, unless you do not know, or unwilling to learn that task, or function. Most importantly listen, learn, earn, respect, build and maintain trust to and from your team, clients, and colleagues. Be real.

Don‘t force it! Sure, building a network is really helpful, but - like always in life - quality is more important than quantity.
