You and your mentor have to be comfortable with having difficult conversations allowing you to fully achieve benefit from the process. In my experience, the best way to gain a potential mentor's attention is to make them see the value of a potential connection straight away. In other words, think about how you could add value to your mentor - perhaps you have specific knowledge that are happy to share, or you also have one connection that could potentially benefit him/ her. You see, if you approach someone for the sole purpose of asking them for something, they are more likely to completely disregard your message. Instead, I recommend that you, first of all, complement their journey and expertise (this helps with everyone really!) and then that you say 'what's in it for them', even if in a subtle or exploratory way. If it's a win-win, your connection is guaranteed!

One good strategy is to first establish a common ground: people are more likely to help if they can somehow see themselves in you. Another good practice is to genuinely appreciate the person's work. There must be a reason why you chose that person and want them to mentor you, so let them know. Everyone loves feeling seen and understood.

All of the work I do is grounded in a strong relationship with clients that comes from clear communication, curiosity, and empathy. Since our mentorship is usually longer term, I want to get to know them as a person and vice versa. It is very difficult to completely compartmentalize our lives. My experience with CIPD mentoring has been that I registered myself with their very organized system and was able to mentor many mentees during the course of 9 years as a mentor. Others might have to work harder as it might not be as straight forward. The first step is to shortlist a few names of those whom you feel fit the criteria of the mentors e.g. people who are experienced in your industry or field. Then perhaps talking to them and finding if there is a good chemistry and if there is time availability is the next step. A meeting with the the mentors may be a good option before coming to a final decision.
