When we have something to aim at, it also validates our individual actions. We can validate if people believe what they say, by what they do and how those actions align to the overall purpose. This is authenticity.

It still makes sense to them.

Arguably, this should be the first step. But realistically, it's a repeatable one. Not merely that you'll go through many cycles of build > test> improve in your business. But also that, for each change, you should gather feedback multiple times. - feedback gathered immediately after the change will highlight the big, glaring errors. But often this feedback may be biased by things simply not being the same as your customers are used to, whether or not they're actually better or worse - feedback gathered a little later, once your customers have used your product or service for a while, can give a better, more truthful picture. Not to mention that there's more chance to discover the small but repeated challenges that erode customer trust.
