In marketing operations where payment data or other sensitive information is handled, I implement tokenisation to replace sensitive data with unique identifiers (tokens). During a biotechnology project, we used tokenisation for processing customer payment data during online transactions. This ensured that no sensitive financial data was stored within our systems, even though we could still process transactions effectively. By tokenising sensitive data, we dramatically reduced the risk of data breaches, while maintaining the ability to perform essential marketing functions like transaction tracking & customer analysis.

I think if you want to be and remain compliant you need to ensure data is collected in a compliant way since the start, ensure you get consent (and even double opt it). Make sure all the tools you use are compliant. That will save you so much time and hassle since it is better to implement strong compliance checks since the start than cleaning bad data. When GDPR was introduced so many companies lost half their contactable database (or more). More and more countries are introducing GDPR like regulations so ensuring you are compliant and have strong privacy compliance processes in place will help you tremendously in the long run
