A lesson I've learned - is that senior stakeholders' needs may not be fully captured in the initial conversation and it needs a further investigation. In a recent collaboration with a Group Engineering Director, we shifted our focus from delivery efficiency (which was highlighted in an initial conversation) to a more fundamental requirement - fulfilling commitments from a Quarterly Business Review regarding releasing prioritized business features, which needs a more holistic approach rather than focus on the engineering side.

I overlooked some key issues, like their lack of understanding, and didn’t involve an influential deputy. I’ve learned a lot since then. Now, I start by diving into stakeholder analysis to really get their needs and concerns. I make sure my communication matches their strategic goals and involve everyone who might influence the project from the get-go. This way, stakeholders understand the project’s value and feel their concerns are addressed, leading to a smoother path to success.

What outcomes matter most to which stakeholders? 2) Analyse what kind of influence & impact each of these senior stakeholders has. 3) Has your project plan and execution approach/timeline factored in the key outcomes expected by these senior stakeholders? If not, please replan & adjust! 4) Build a trusting relationship with senior stakeholders. 5) Remember no senior stakeholder will be able to appreciate surprises thrown in just when they were expecting to see the actual outcomes of this complex project. 6) If there are risks, your job is to foresee & mitigate them! Don't hide delays/issues, maintain transparency!

I’ve learned to be upfront about project timelines, deliverables, and potential bumps along the way. By laying out clear expectations from the start and keeping everyone updated as we go, I can steer clear of surprises and keep stakeholders happy. Plus, being open to tweaking plans based on their feedback or shifting priorities helps keep everyone on board and the project on track.
