We all need inspiration. Timing is critical, but I'd recommend using a portion of your 1:1 time to try and inspire your boss with your ideas for innovation. Create a deck or a white paper and outline your bold idea. That allows you both to collaborate on innovative ideas and remain positive, while allowing your boss to know that you are also aligning with current needs. Again, timing is everything. It is also important to maintain your own positivity when you have a boss, who is uninterested in your ideas for innovation. There are other outlets. Use your strengths in DEI groups in your org. Write an academic paper or scholarly article. "Boss" doesn't just have to be "supervisor" it can benefit the "org" or "industry."

'Let me know if you need any support.' That is a sloppy statement. Think. Offer specifics. e.g., 'Can I support in setting up that meeting with xx stakeholders to discuss the item on your mind. Hopefully, you are involved in a business constantly innovating in small ways or, even better, you are implementing change in big or little ways yourself. Positive reinforcement is the number one way to ensure others feel seen as contributors to innovation and I believe the "amount" of effort is actually irrelevant. I don't like the "tier" system of recognition. I recognize people in public channels or directly in emails to their supervisors to ensure they have been championed for helping with projects that moved innovation and collaboration forward. Absolutely critical. Absurd to attach colors or LOE to a person's commitment to help. Did you help? Then I am grateful and you are a rockstar.

One of my current mentors said to focus on the "what" more than the "how." Even writing that makes me cringe! We must focus on the 'how' because this is where all of the...but, I stop myself because I have been reflecting since she said this. In this day and age, we ARE being outpaced by this lack of reflection. We need to objectively step back, assess if we are engaging in recurrent analysis paralysis, and iterate in small/compliant/workable pieces. Innovation is halted when we don't reflect, pivot, progress, adjust, test, pivot again, etc. We can't measure an outcome if we never get to the outcome because we stuck in the "how." Regular reflection allows us to identify some of these kinks that are becoming more commonplace today.
