I think part of being an employee or a founder of an early stage startup is handling mistakes and being ok with continuous changes and sometimes large pivots. The key to minimize that is having access to a stream of knowledge and information. This stream should be always diverse and continuous, best sources I could think of: - Your customers (or potential customers), learn about the problem and the real pain points. - Your team, Keep always a flat and open discussions/feedbacks. - Online knowledge sources, I highly recommend YC and SaaStr. - Industry experts in the domain you're building in. - Peer and friends discussions, talk with your friends who are in the startups world and learn how they do things, what tools they are using...etc

Take Fairphone for instance. Their vision is very clear: to create sustainable smartphones that are ethically sourced and environmentally friendly. This focused vision has helped them build a loyal community of customers who care about sustainability and ethics in technology. However, I’ve also seen startups struggle when their vision lacks specificity. For example, I recently saw a startup that wanted to “disrupt the market with innovative AI solutions.” Eeehm…what market? What solutions? And why?? Their lack of a clear direction makes it hard for investors and customers to understand what they are all about, and this might hurt their growth.

The successful startups I've seen are the ones that are “smart” about their money. They set up a budget that gives them room to maneuver but keeps them from going overboard. They focus on investing in things that really strengthen their business. They also understand the return on investment (ROI) of their investments. They use financial forecasts to know exactly if they're on track or not. Plus, they regularly check their finances to catch any issues early and make changes as they go.

This is the second most important aspect in a startup. As a founder/ leader you need to accurately project the Capital needed to execute the business vision. Project a 2-3 years capital needed for the business project and be realistic. Avoid this mistake at all cost.

Hire your first 10 employees as if they're the only 10 employees you could ever have. Be extremely careful when hiring. Spend enough time talking to them as a person, and see if you have a good match. Remember, when your company grows - these are the people who will be helping you hire the next employees. And have no doubt - they will be looking for people that are a great fit for them.
