You're met with resistance on renewable energy. How can you win over stakeholders for the shift?

Aikido Politics is one of the best approaches I've come across - around 25 years ago from Amory Lovins from Rocky Mountain Institute. Don't fight people who are against renewables, but rejoice in the fact that they care about the future of energy and find common ground in justice for children, communities and future generations - and from there, learn to walk side by side in convergent, rather than divergent dialogue.

History has taught us that resistances come to any proposed big changes from certain groups. Energy transition is no different. I would first listen to the people resisting changes and understand their concern. Then I will show them examples of real renewable energy projects that were developed in the past 20 years, and how it made the energy system cleaner, more efficient, and better overall. Then I will show them how clean energy projects are planned and business models are developed. With these steps, I will try to prove that renewable energy projects are not just dreams, but very achievable with proper planning and execution.

Make it profitable. The only way to ensure the renewable energy transition will succeed is to find a way to generate a profit from the investment. This can come through a host of different methodologies including tax credits available under the IRA, capturing economies of scale, and finding reduced barriers to entry. With profits come investors and general interest in a sector that can help break this resistance.

The global energy sector is undergoing several transformations ranging from abolishing the non-renewable energy sources, electrifying the mobility sector, which become more economically viable and environmentally friendly. This shift from conventional, centralized energy sources to decentralized, renewable energy is known as Energy Transition. In order to win over Stakeholders for this shift, I have to listen carefully to their concerns and try to solve their problems and issues . Communication and respect are key elements to build strong relationships with the clients and to gain the stakeholders' confidence. I should be transparent with them and show them some facts, projects and statistics to strengthen my arguments.

While advocating for alternative energy sources it is equally important to emphasize the key role that end use efficiency can play in reducing the capital cost of the renewable energy technology. A power system that optimizes the cost of energy delivery while reducing carbon emissions represents a holistic approach that mutually reinforces bottom line economics with environmental security.

Economic value creation is paramount in decision makinhg. With reducing cost of solar power and soaring cost of Grid electricity (In India) and ease in availing finance has propelled the Growth of Distributed energy in Indian markets and has also attracted many professionals to pursue entrepreneurship. This has led to increase in competitiveness among India Solar Companies and in this process consumers benefit as more and more companies are devising strategies to enhance the economic value offered at a reasonable and affordable cost. When the Levelised cost of power from Solar is about INR 2.5 ($0.029) and grid rates are about INR 8.5 (avg across India) ($0.10) i certainly believe there can seldom by ne resistance to adopt solar power.

Para mejorar, aún más, estos incentivos habría que facilitar la tramitación de estos, y que su adjudicación fuera lo más rápida posible, generando así un interés y seguridad en los inversores de este tipo de tecnologías. Si a todo esto, le unimos la importante bajada de costes de estas tecnologías, sobretodo en la eólica, y más aún, en la fotovoltaica, hacen un mix muy suculento por la competitividad en costes de operación ( costes menores que con tecnologías fósiles) y por los ahorros en energías a largo plazo que ofrecen.

Stakeholders have access to a lot more diverse information sources, some accurate and some that are not, but they all have to be addressed. Being up front with tradeoffs is key here; there is no one technology that is clean from inception, through manufacturing and ultimately disposal. The cleanest technologies and products have dirty aspects to them, and openly sharing this allows you to not only educate stakeholders, but also arms them with information to make a more informed decision. I like to think that we're not trying to convince anyone, we're merely presenting the facts as best we know them.

It seems that the environmental benefits created by renewable projects do not have much impact on investors and beneficiaries. The main challenge of the stakeholders is, first of all, the financial issues and the preservation of the company's capital, and then the environmental issues may be taken into consideration, that is, exactly when the investment return is guaranteed. Due to these characteristics, in a time of inequality between different energy sources, the stakeholders of the project will not have much desire for environmental issues.

According to my experience in the design and construction of wind power plants, the most important value from the point of view of a private investor is the guarantee of investment and the appropriate interest rate and short investment return time. In cases where the investor in the energy sector produces energy for his factory, the conditions may be different and the issues of energy security, energy portfolio of independence from oil, etc. will be taken into consideration. Otherwise, for the private investor, the country's energy security or oil independence will not matter if the project is unprofitable.

Climate action! Biodiversity loss. Mental health; eco anxiety. Migration. Political far right. These are all interlinked. If we are concerned about one, then we need to act on climate protection and renewable energy key.

Speak the truth. Some of these projects are great but they arn't all somehow magic bullets just because they are 'renewable' :)

Engaging stakeholders should be the culture of the industry. Renewable energy in India has been seeing excellent transformation from the last decade through the engagement and educating stakeholders. When we educate stakeholders including customers, vendors, employees at level with the respective knowledge, it will be an additional value to the company which will be an unique value proposition as well.

We are in this together - nationally and globally. What happens in one part of the world, affects our planet in another. That means negative action and reactions - but also positive.

Based on my experience, the live demonstrations, site visits and knowledge exchange workshops help in engaging stakeholders. The best examples are that of eCooking programs with live demonstrations and awareness campaign among the users. The events helped in breaking the resistance and building trust in eCooking technologies. Additionally, the learning sharing workshops helped in replication in other intervention areas.

The main advantage of developing renewable energy, particularly wind power, is the quick return for all parties involved. From implementation to the economic outcomes of the investment, this approach generates profits and financial results swiftly.
