Being open, honest, kind and available can help to establish rapport and build trust. This is essential in any relationship but very helpful in a mentoring relationship so that the mentee feels comfortable sharing their concerns, questions or needs.

At the beginning of a new relationship there is a common nursing experience to build upon. Talk about your common experiences in school or during your first assignments to get a sense of who this person is at heart and how they handle new situations.

I'd recommend taking the time to regularly check in with your mentee about their personal and professional well-being, beyond the scope of set goals or tasks. This can help reinforce the trust and show genuine care for their overall development. Additionally, encouraging a two-way feedback loop can demystify the mentor-mentee hierarchy, making the relationship more collaborative and enriching for both parties. Creating this kind of open and supportive environment not only accelerates learning but also cultivates a lasting and impactful mentorship experience.

Mentors have the unique opportunity to make the first impression in the practice of nursing care. It is your responsibility to set the standard and enforce great practice skills. Holding your peers accountable is a part of this task too! Encourage a safe and trusting environment for your mentee to ask questions and have open discussions. Emphasize the importance of learning and comprehension; understanding the why behind all tasks will help better integrate the mentee into practice.

As a mentor, it is important to be available and serve as an "open book". Being approachable and letting your mentee know that you are available to help guide and support them are critically important elements in a successful mentoring relationship.

The first steps of mentoring is to share you expertise and insights. What I always do is ask where is their line of comfort. Then I talk about mine. As we get to know each other we are each getting a feeling about the other. I always start by doing all care, while talking through what I am thinking as I go about our work.

I would suggest encouraging mentees to engage in reflective practices, such as maintaining a learning journal. This can help them internalize the lessons learned from the resources and discussions, and encourage self-directed growth. Moreover, facilitating opportunities for the mentee to 'teach back' or present on what they've learned can reinforce their understanding and boost their confidence. This reciprocal learning can also offer fresh insights to the mentor, making the relationship mutually beneficial and more dynamic.

I would start by listening. Nurses entering the profession have a different lens for which they expect to serve as a nurse thus forming different perspectives than tenured nurses posses. We have an opportunity to meet each generation where it is while holding true to our nursing oath.

One important skill to help cultivate in your mentee is the ability to self-reflect and also find resources on their own. You will not always be present with them, so it is important to help them be self sufficient in navigating any challenges or roadblocks and also in advocating for themselves.

As questions come up while taking care of our patient, I am constantly talking about my thought process and asking them to tell me what they are thinking. I am making mental notes about areas that will need to be specifically addressed during their orientation. I am constantly teaching and seeking new directions to explore with the mentee.

I'd recommend establishing a structured yet flexible framework for these reflection and feedback sessions, perhaps through regular check-ins or after specific milestones. This can provide a consistent space for open dialogue and growth. Additionally, creating an atmosphere where feedback is a two-way street, encouraging mentees to share their thoughts on the mentoring process, not only fosters a deeper sense of respect and trust but also enhances the mentor's effectiveness. Embracing this culture of open communication and mutual feedback can transform the mentoring relationship into a profound learning experience for both parties.

Nursing is a quite demanding profession and sometimes there are not widely known outlets for support. It is important to convey to your mentee that it is normal to feel stressed and overwhelmed with tasks and also with some of the things you see as a nurse. Important to remind them to take care of themselves and to take vacation, rest periods and to utilize resources for support to prevent burnout.

Soon after showing them how I do it and letting them in on my thought processes, I give the tasks over to them, one a time, while I do the others, still talking out the underlying thought process of why I am doing what.

I would recommend implementing regular wellness check-ins as part of the mentoring process, creating a safe space for mentees to share their feelings and challenges openly. Encouraging the practice of mindfulness or stress-reduction techniques could also be beneficial. Furthermore, advocating for a balanced lifestyle and helping mentees to establish boundaries between work and personal life can play a significant role in preventing burnout. It's important to lead by example in this regard, demonstrating healthy habits and self-care practices in one's own life as a mentor.

I'd recommend creating a culture of celebration within the mentoring relationship, where achievements, big or small, are recognized. This could be as simple as a congratulatory note for a job well done or as formal as setting up a milestone achievement plan with specific rewards. Additionally, facilitating opportunities for the mentee to share their successes with a broader audience, such as in team meetings or through professional networks, can further validate their efforts and growth. Encouraging the mentee to set and reach for new goals, perhaps even beyond what they initially thought possible, can help in cultivating an ongoing sense of achievement and fulfillment.

I look for unique ways to celebrate the little successes of the mentee when they do a job and explain why it was good. This is the time to heap praise on them. Do not withhold praise, because those rewards are what makes the hard work worth doing for a new nurse. By this time, the mentee should be doing most of the work, and correctly verbalizing everything that they are doing and why they are doing it in that way and time.
