It is obvious that electric makes sense. If I am working on a service truck for a heavy equipment company I definitely want a fuel powered compressor/generator/welder. Working in the coal mines of West Virginia such technology was crucial.

I agree, but I would also add that if choosing an electric air compressor, I would always order mine from the E series, there are scroll type compressors that have multiple stages. However, the best units are variable speed drive, which are very very smooth and energy efficient.

If you can get away with a reciprocating kind because of the noise (think v-twin engine) with start/stop control then i would settle for a recip. So, as a mechanic that has worked on a variety of machines ranging from small engine type equipment to over the road trucks and construction mining equipment, my most versatile and useful compressor will be a v type 30 electric driven unit. The type 30 V style compressor head is oil lubricated which extends its longevity and can provide all necessary volume for any mechanic shop. This is not suitable however for heavy use body shop or anything that involves high volume spray equipment. I would only recommend going over this with a scroll type electric driven stationary unit if the shop has more than 10 technicians or has more than 8 technicians and works on heavy industrial/mining equipment. This only due to the large reserve tanks required

If I had a shop I would install a rotory compressor. Rotories typically have a higher cfm and I have found them to be quieter than most upright units.

If your jut starting out you could look in to used compressors. I purchased my compressors used from a pumatic animated pizza resteraunt years ago. I was able to purchase 2 used compressors for less than one new unit. Over the last 30 years I was able to cycle them in and out of use. I always had a back up. Yes you are taking a chance on a used unit, but you can look it over just like any other purchase. The older compressors rarely had pump issues. Most problems are safety switches and electrical.
