You’re managing a team of product developers. What’s the best way to keep them motivated?

Encourage open communication: A transparent environment where ideas are heard and valued. 5. Align work with passion: Connect tasks to their interests for deeper commitment. In product management, these practices cultivate a motivated, innovative team ready to tackle any challenge.

Keeping a product development team motivated is all about feeling valued and seeing results. In my experience, setting clear, achievable goals is a great first step. This way, everyone's on the same page and can celebrate milestones together.

I think motivation comes from knowing why we are working on something, hence, having clearly communicated goals is the key to success. I personally have different types of conversation with the team - whether that's asking my PO to give a short overview to the team or me as a BA giving the details of what we need to work on. Also, as a SM I spend time with my team 1-on-1 to make sure we are aligned on both organizational goals but also personal goals.

Coming from the entrepreneurial background, I don't like the idea that employees should be motivated, I think it should come from within the person WHEN they know what they are trying to achieve. I think allowing and encouraging ownership means that the person has to create something themselves.

Collaboration and diversity are the cornerstones for effective product development. Many times Product development entails multidisciplinary learnings and solutions. One individual may not be able to bring all these expertise. Hence it is imperative to go out and collaborate with different functions in the organization. Creating the right environment is one of the most challenging aspects of managing a team. Providing equipment, training, resources and updates won’t move the needle for engagement. It’s important to truly understand the personality types on your team and engage each person effectively. Be intentional about speaking candidly, even on serious meetings and schedule out of office team events.
