Having one to one open ended discussion with focus on active listening and not grilling is the way forward. Understand the reason for low performance- is it due to the illness of a self or family member, lack of skill set, issues with other members of the team, lack of interest in the work, addictions or psychological or other issues?Try to find the cause of the problem and don't try to degrade the person in front of others. Provide relevant opportunities for upskilling and reskilling , provide SMART goals, provide a mentor, give a time frame and clear instructions and see if the patient improves. If not, search for someone new.
