Sales is an extremely dynamic activity with the need to learn from each and every incident. Regarding direct sales, take note of: 1. Do you like what you are doing. If not, try to move out and do something you like. 2. What is the cycle time (lead to enquiry to booking to payment collection) of the product you sell? Do you sell FMCG/gasoline oil to fuel pumps or do you sell high end engineering products or do you sell to govenments? Each has a different cycle time and hence your strategy must be different for each of them. 3. Be humble but always be proud that only after you sell something, does your employer and other department employees get to continue their job. 4. Respect the client -- sell so that they come back for more.

Direct sales is all about the wisdom you gain over long period by learning every day. And the learning happen by doing and not reading the books on it. So an experienced mentor or coach plays an important role who can showy you how to handle various hurdles and objection while doing the direct Sales.

Factors mentioned above are relevant & originative. Over the years what I learnt is that, in a situation where I have to take a strategic decision or choosing an option for years to come is "finding MY WHY". Believe you me, it open ways & means and innate the strength to face the challenges/hardships... which are inevitable BTW

Beyond finding mentors externally, come to interviews prepared with a detailed 30/60/90 plan to share with a hiring manager. Ramp period is the most critical time, that if approached intentionally, can set you up for success, and if not ongoing struggle. Within that plan, you will want to add an initiative around finding 1-2 salespeople on your team, in the role or a similar role, that can spend focused time with you to show you best practices, provide a clear focus and help shorten your ramp period. Invest into those relationships early on, whenever possible.

Reciprocity goes a long way to creating meaningful relationships. Build a solid network, learn what they do and then introduce them to people who can help advance their cause or career. Giving people something with nothing expected in return, builds Trust, opens doors and helps cement relationships that will pay dividends over time. Too often we ask our network what they can do for us. When you give first, it’s amazing what doors can open.

People sometimes get too comfortable in their roles or too busy and they are heads down working, thinking that they're doing the right thing, and then suddenly they get laid off and are left confused and overwhelmed. They haven't nurtured their network or been intentional about building it. Do not be in that position! You should be finding time to network and add value throughout your careers. Many people find their next opportunity when they're really not looking, through networking. As someone told me early in my career, 'your network is your net worth'--build it, nurture it, and take care of it!

One of the most important way to generate direct sales is sowing seeds, through leads, webinars, attending conferences, networking events, etc. Old customer database, getting referrals is one of the best way for direct sales.

Stop reading sales books about manipulating conversations and “pushing the bruises” on clients to purchase / move forward… have a real conversation and listen to your partners in purchasing your product. Good people with a solid moral compass will outsell the sales book

Get to know Marketers targeting your sales segment. Both roles overlap. Strategy, targets, goals, messaging, etc. If these overlaps aren't coordinated, success may be elusive. Working together, understanding each discipline's unique capabilities is a ticket to org-wide success.

This is one of the most challenging careers and demonstrated by the simple statement - a salesperson can be the most poor person you know, or make more than a brain surgeon. The difference is skill. Developing this is a lifelong task in sales given all the topics you can master. Some of them are - interpersonal communication, influence, negotiation, laws of attraction, argumentation, social science, psychology. Development comes from 2 places, experience and formal education (a book, seminar, college course, videos, etc). Experience or the school of hard knocks is a great teacher, although slow. Formal education is quicker but not as effective. Use both.

D’après moi il n’y a pas d’ordre établi dans les étapes pour franchir ce cap mais l’ensemble qui fera la différence. Un commercial se doit de toujours être en capacité à se remettre en question afin de toujours s’améliorer et se perfectionner, à cela se rajoute sa capacité d’adaptation. En jumelant les deux ainsi que les différents points énumérés, il lui sera possible de franchir ce cap car pour lui cela deviendra juste un nouvel objectif à réaliser, un nouveau challenge à relever avec brio.

The one consistent thing that all great sellers have is...an innate curiosity. I never seen any seller who is successful over an extended period of time not possess this trait. It is amazing how many sellers lack this most obvious of skills. Get curious.

There’s no one formula for this, in my opinion all mentioned are relevant and should be attended to. It’s important to review your current situation to appreciate the gaps, then you work on the gaps. You need the network to help with the connection and share your experiences with the network you have built. It’s therefore important to have a holistic approach to this.

According to my experience direct selling is specific and requires specific skills and a particular mindset also. First one should be fully convinced that the product or service one is selling really solves a particular problem and or satisfies a particular need. Then, the rest becomes easy, i.e, helping others to meet their need or solve this problems. This is how I started my career in sales just after school since 27 years ago to earn some pocket money!

Consider whether direct sales is for you. Question: "Do you care about what you are selling, representing?" and "do you care about the people whose lives your product will influence?" If not, consider a different path because this path could get ugly in the end.
