It appears that the fashion industry is moving away from fossil fuel-based fibre and towards man-made fibre in the hopes to become more sustainable. However, as you correctly pointed out, if the industry is not sourced from credible sources, the assumption is flawed unless the industry is aware of how the production systems are managed.

Since the term 'sustainable' is highly abused, it is quite difficult to find brands that are truly sustainable. I generally look for the following in a brand - the use of raw materials, certifications such as Fair-Trade, Global Organic textile Standard, brands that do not mass produce, brands with high quality fabric and stitching, brands that emphasise on sustainability in the entire supply chain.

Within this, man-made cellulosic fibres (MMCFs) are often considered a sustainable textile alternative to fossil-fuel-based fibres like polyester and nylon. They are also among the fastest-growing share of global fibre production. However, it is often argued that less than 60% come from independently verified certified sources. One way to rethink the paradigm shift in the fashion industry to an ethical, regenerative, and transparent low-carbon future is to ensure the forest-based fibres being used are sourced responsibly from sustainably managed forest areas. The ultimate goal is obviously to build the circular use of fibres.
