R&D is just not a department or stream where you work. Until and unless you have tremendous passion for what you do and like and enjoy your path.. One will not be able to sustain here for long. So identify your IKIGAI, as they say.. Then identify the organization which can help you but a good basement on your thoughts and ideas, identify a good mentor who can channelize your energies in the right direction. Patience and constant connection with people in your field helps. Then you can either move on with your entrepreneurial journey or get associated with companies that align with your thoughts on goals. These should help you in the long run.

If you don't know which area is "right" for you to start performing R&D in, then your first order of the day should be to identify the problems your customers need help solving. Focus on the problems that matter to them the most, ideally ones your competitors haven't yet identified. Once you've done that, the how, why and where of your R&D efforts will be much clearer. Also, R&D doesn't begin at the "top," nor at the "bottom." R&D should be everyone's job. Each and every employee should be on the lookout for new and better ways to solve problems, both internally and for the customer.
