Personally I found that giving myself assignments is the best way to progress. Pretend you have a client hiring you for a packaging design project and you need to submit 3 concepts in a weeks time. Or that you need to take an existing brand and build the visual identity for an event they are hosting, with the requirement of keeping the look and feel close to their brand without the need of having their logo all over it. These hypothetical project force you to use your existing skills in combination, while also adding what you don’t know yet with the help of tutorials.

If you love punk then try some punk, if you love type, play and learn all you can about the rules and then break them. There is no wrong way to design.
